Long-awaited infrastructure project opens after delays
The Cabildo of Tenerife will open the Padre Anchieta footbridge to public use this Monday. The architectural and engineering project is designed to relieve the congestion that builds up on the TF-5 motorway as traffic from the north of the island enters La Laguna. Work on the structure began in 2021 with an initial completion deadline of 18 months. Since then, it has suffered repeated delays until, finally, it will open this Monday.
Costs escalate from initial budget
The cost of the project has also risen significantly from its original budget of just over 8 million euros to a final figure exceeding 13 million euros. The inauguration ceremony will be held at 9:00 am and will be led by the President of the Cabildo, Rosa Dávila. She will be accompanied by the Deputy Minister of Infrastructure of the Government of the Canary Islands, Francisco González; the Rector of the University of La Laguna (ULL), Francisco García; the First Deputy Mayor of La Laguna City Council, Badel Albelo; and the Island Councillor for Roads, Dámaso Arteaga. Also attending will be José Romo, engineer and CEO of Fhecor Ingenieros Consultores, and Faustino Ormazábal de la Merced, territorial director of OHLA in the Canary Islands. The event will further be attended by municipal and island authorities, local residents, and students from the ULL.
Public access and ongoing works
The public will be able to access the footbridge from 10:30 am, once the inaugural event has concluded. Throughout Monday and Tuesday, access will be available both via the footbridge itself and from the roundabout below. Although the footbridge is being inaugurated this week, the Cabildo has clarified that some works remain to be completed. From Wednesday onwards, work will begin on the lower roundabout, and access will be closed through the 11 pedestrian crossings that surround it.
Further disruption ahead with new bus interchange project
The area will remain heavily affected by major construction work for many months to come. The Cabildo recently announced the renovation of the bus interchange located next to the roundabout, a facility that is barely 15 years old and originally cost 7 million euros. The new works are scheduled to take 20 months and come with a price tag of 10 million euros.
