Maspalomas powers ahead with new solar plants and EV charging points
Maspalomas is continuing its march towards a more sustainable energy model with the installation of new photovoltaic plants and solar canopies equipped with electric vehicle charging points. These facilities, the Cabildo (island council) explained in a statement, will generate renewable energy for self-consumption and give a significant boost to the Playa del Inglés Energy Community.
Nilo shopping centre plant already operational
Raúl García Brink, Gran Canaria’s councillor for the Environment, Climate, Energy and Knowledge, recently visited two of the infrastructures currently under construction that reflect this progress, including the one at the Nilo Shopping Centre, where work has already been completed. The photovoltaic plant is linked to the Playa del Inglés Energy Community, an initiative that, he assured, promotes the shared generation and consumption of renewable energy. It boasts a nominal capacity of 275 kW and 276.48 kW peak, using 432 modules of 640 Wp and six inverters, with an estimated annual production of 549,208 kWh.
García Brink indicated that it will supply energy not only to the shopping centre but also to members of the Playa del Inglés Energy Community within a radius of five kilometres. In this regard, he encouraged the public to join this initiative, which will make it possible to obtain clean energy at a cheaper price than is usually available commercially.
Environmental impact equivalent to planting nearly 1,885 trees
The photovoltaic plant at the Nilo Shopping Centre will cover the consumption of approximately 158 homes, avoid more than 314 tonnes of CO2 annually, and generate energy equivalent to covering over 4.2 million kilometres in electric vehicles, with an environmental impact similar to planting nearly 1,885 trees. The project is part of a wider scheme that involves installing photovoltaic systems in nine buildings in the area, with a total capacity of 1.6 MWp and an annual generation of 2,790 MWh—enough to supply approximately 700 homes.
The initiative, financed with €1.5 million from European Next Generation funds as part of the Recovery, Transformation and Resilience Plan, will reduce users’ energy bills by between 20% and 50% and prevent the emission of 1,615 tonnes of CO2 per year.
How to join the energy community
The Cabildo notes that residents and businesses interested in taking advantage of being part of this energy community can do so through the website www.comunidadesenergeticasdegrancanaria.com.
Further installations on Avenida de Granada
Meanwhile, on Avenida de Granada, another photovoltaic installation is progressing as part of the Impulsa Maspalomas Sustainable Tourism Destination Plan. This infrastructure will have a nominal capacity of 100 kW and 105.78 kW peak, using 172 modules and two inverters, with an estimated annual production of 241,515 kWh. The energy generated will supply around 69 homes, prevent the emission of more than 138 tonnes of CO2 per year, and produce the equivalent of nearly 1.8 million kilometres driven by electric vehicles, in addition to an impact equivalent to planting 829 trees.
It also incorporates charging points for electric vehicles, with one 22 kW unit and three 14 kW units, providing six 7 kW outlets. This project, together with those being developed at Plaza Miramar and Avenida de Gran Canaria, falls under the Impulsa Maspalomas initiative, financed with European Next Generation funds and aimed at reinforcing the sustainability of the tourist destination through the green transition, energy efficiency, digitalisation, and improved competitiveness.
