Brake Failure Suspected in Fatal Tourist Bus Crash
The Civil Guard is investigating a suspected brake system failure as the primary cause of a serious accident involving a tourist bus carrying British holidaymakers in San Sebastián de La Gomera. The incident has so far resulted in one fatality and 26 people injured, four of them seriously.
Driver’s Desperate Struggle to Control Vehicle
The island director of the Spanish General State Administration, Juan Luis Navarro, explained to journalists that the driver attempted to fight for control from the moment he detected the fault with the brakes. Despite his efforts, the vehicle eventually careened down the hillside on the GM-2 road near El Revolcadero. “Fortunately, it stopped before being catapulted over the edge, otherwise it could have been much, much more serious,” Mr Navarro pointed out.
Casualties and Medical Response
Aside from the man who lost his life, two other passengers, aged 73 and 42 respectively, suffered serious multiple trauma injuries. They were airlifted by helicopter to La Candelaria Hospital in Tenerife. The other 25 injured individuals were taken to the Virgen de Guadalupe Hospital in La Gomera, two of whom are also in a serious condition.
Major Emergency Operation Mobilised
A large-scale rescue operation was swiftly launched. It involved two medicalised helicopters, one medicalised ambulance, two basic life support ambulances, two non-urgent medical transport units, a doctor and four nurses from the San Sebastián health centre, personnel from the Canary Islands Government Emergency and Rescue Group (GES), a Civil Guard rescue helicopter, and resources from the Island Council’s Environment department, the Spanish Red Cross, Civil Protection, the Emergency Assistance Association (AEA), Local Police, and Valle Gran Rey Firefighters.
Road Reopened with Caution Advised
The Island Council has now reopened the GM-2 road to traffic. However, they are urging the public to exercise maximum caution throughout the afternoon as specialist personnel continue to carry out maintenance and safety work in the affected area.
