El Médano prepares to host world windsurfing championships

El Médano set to reclaim wind sports crown

The south coast of Tenerife is preparing to reclaim its crown as the global epicentre of wind sports. From 31 July to 9 August 2026, the iconic Playa de El Cabezo beach in the municipality of Granadilla de Abona will once again become the great international reference point for windsurfing, hosting one of the most eagerly anticipated events in the nautical calendar.

For the twelfth time, the waters of El Médano will serve as the stage for the PWA/WWT Open, Junior and Masters World Championship, a competition that will bring together the finest specialists on the planet in both the women’s and men’s categories.

Spanish Open Championship added for 2026

The big new feature of this edition will be the simultaneous integration of the Spanish Open Championship, a major added incentive that reinforces the island’s position as the premier venue for top-level national competition.

The 2026 competition arrives with attractive technical and commercial innovations for enthusiasts of the sport. The organisers have confirmed the launch of the Foil Drive Challenge, an innovative proposal that will combine exhibitions of cutting-edge equipment from the official brand, on-water demonstrations, and a full weekend of pure competition, bringing the latest technological trends in water sports closer to the general public.

Beyond the competition: a festival atmosphere

Beyond the adrenaline on the water, the El Médano event will retain its characteristic social festival feel with an ambitious parallel programme designed for all audiences. The event site will feature a large main marquee housing the following areas:

  • Commercial and gastronomic zone: Spaces dedicated to sector retailers and a varied dining offer.
  • Children’s area: A safe, lively environment designed for the enjoyment of the little ones while the official heats are taking place.
  • Cultural agenda: The festival will be completed daily with live music performances, technical talks, workshops and various urban leisure proposals, guaranteeing a unique atmosphere throughout the ten days of competition.
