Green light for removing the Gran Playa power line
The Cabildo de Fuerteventura has given the go-ahead for the dismantling of the overhead power line known as ‘Gran Playa’, which crosses the Dunas de Corralejo Natural Park in the municipality of La Oliva. The island authority explained that the favourable report issued by its Territorial Planning service “represents a decisive step towards the removal of this network, which runs through this protected natural area from east to west”.
Protected status rules out overhead lines
The Natural Resources Management Plan (PORN) for the Dunas de Corralejo Natural Park, which the Cabildo is currently in the process of amending, expressly prohibits overhead lines in the area, part of the Natura 2000 network of protected natural spaces. For this reason, the report issued by the island authority’s Territorial Planning department is a fundamental step towards the dismantling finally being carried out by EDISTRIBUCIÓN Redes Digitales S.L.U.
Conditions to minimise impact on the environment
As conditions for the work, existing road infrastructure and footpaths must be used rather than opening new tracks or paths, so as to minimise the impact on the environment. Should any isolated damage be detected, the affected surroundings will be restored.
Work continues on protection plans for other natural spaces
Finally, the island authority indicated that it continues working on drawing up the Natural Resources Management Plans (PORN) for the natural parks of Corralejo, Jandía and Islote de Lobos, as well as the Betancuria Rural Park, as key documents for defining the protection and uses of these spaces.
