Desokupa leader confirms he will attend Craig David concert in Tenerife

Daniel Esteve, the leader of the controversial group Desokupa, has confirmed he will be travelling to Tenerife to attend the Craig David concert, announced as the closing event of the Fit Experience Fest. “I’m going to Tenerife for a friend’s festival,” Esteve stated on social media, describing himself as a friend of one of the organisers of the Fit Experience Fest, the contentious event that will take place for the third consecutive year this Saturday, 9 May, at the Parque Marítimo in Santa Cruz de Tenerife.

Tenants’ union condemns the event

The Tenerife Tenants’ Union has strongly criticised the festival and continues to demand that the Government of the Canary Islands, the Tenerife Island Council, and especially Santa Cruz City Council withdraw their support for the event due to its links with far-right networks such as Desokupa. Days ago, the union launched a petition on the Resist.es platform calling on the authorities to withdraw all backing. In just three days, they have gathered over 1,500 signatures.

“Under the guise of a family-friendly and inclusive event, this festival is nothing more than a propaganda platform for companies that are the economic engine of the most violent far right,” the Tenerife Tenants’ Union stated.

Public funding under scrutiny

The Deputy Ministry of Sports of the Government of the Canary Islands confirmed to this newspaper that they are collaborating with the event through a sports sponsorship contract worth €14,900. The Tenerife Island Council declined to respond to questions from this newspaper. Santa Cruz City Council limited itself to referring to a statement from the organising company, which claimed that “any link with the management or organisation of the event is categorically false.”

However, as can be seen on the social media accounts of Desokupa leader Daniel Esteve, he will be attending the event. “I’m not part of the organisation, but since I’ve been invited,” Esteve said, adding: “I’m going to spend a few days in Tenerife, looking forward to seeing my Canarian brothers.” He posed with products from Lifrepro, the brand organising the festival and a sponsor of Club Desokupa, which Esteve runs.

Links to extremists

The executive director of the company organising the festival is Alejandro Monedero, who on his social media encourages people to sign up to Club Desokupa. One of its instructors is Daniel Toledo, alias ‘Jacaré’, a known neo-Nazi and former mixed martial arts fighter who was present at previous editions of Fit Experience Fest.

Union slams ‘institutional whitewashing’

“While thousands of families in our islands live under the constant threat of eviction and housing insecurity, the Tenerife Island Council, the Government of the Canary Islands and Santa Cruz City Council have decided where to place their priorities: institutionally whitewashing those who make a living from intimidation, once again,” the Tenerife Tenants’ Union said in a statement.
