Canary Islands heat alert: temperatures to hit 37C

Heat pre-alert declared across the archipelago

The Canary Islands government, through its General Directorate of Emergencies, has declared a pre-alert for maximum temperatures across the entire archipelago effective from 11:00am on Sunday, 24 May. The decision, announced in a government press release, was made based on information provided by the State Meteorological Agency (AEMET) and other available sources, in accordance with the Canary Islands Specific Emergency Plan for Adverse Weather Phenomena (PEFMA).

Hottest spots in the eastern islands

During this hot spell, temperatures are expected to reach and even exceed 37C in Fuerteventura and Lanzarote, particularly in inland areas in the southern half of these islands. In Gran Canaria, maximum temperatures could reach and surpass 34C in inland and southern-facing areas, especially those oriented towards the south and west. Meanwhile, in the midlands and summits of Tenerife and La Gomera, temperatures could also exceed 32C, particularly on south-facing slopes.

Western islands less severely affected

For the islands of El Hierro and La Palma, the episode is expected to be somewhat less severe, although temperatures could still reach and occasionally surpass 30C. This is specifically forecast for the midlands and summits in the northeast of El Hierro, as well as the western slope of La Palma.

Safety advice for the public

In light of these forecasts, the public is urged to follow the self-protection advice issued by the General Directorate of Emergencies. Authorities recommend staying hydrated, avoiding direct sun exposure during the hottest hours, and taking special care of vulnerable groups such as the elderly, children, and those with chronic conditions.
