Heat episode brings uncertainty and calima dust
The Canary Islands’ Emergency Coordination Centre is closely monitoring the ongoing high-temperature episode affecting the archipelago. According to Lidia Jubera, head of section at the department, the situation carries “a certain degree of uncertainty” due to the presence of tropical moisture, cloud cover and the possibility of convective activity. The episode is also accompanied by suspended dust — commonly known as calima — although concentrations are expected to vary depending on the forecast model.
Pre-alerts activated across the islands
A pre-alert for calima is currently in force across the eastern islands, while pre-alerts for maximum temperatures have been activated in Gran Canaria, Tenerife, La Palma and Fuerteventura. On Gran Canaria, the temperature pre-alert covers the summits and the eastern, southern and western slopes. On Tenerife, it applies to the summits and mid-altitude zones of the south and west, as well as the southern slopes of the metropolitan area.
Wildfire warning issued for Gran Canaria and Tenerife
The INFOCA wildfire alert has also been activated for Gran Canaria, affecting summit areas and north-facing slopes above 600 metres in altitude, as well as west, south and east-facing slopes above 400 metres. On Tenerife, the alert applies to the summits and mid-altitude areas of the south and west. Island councils (cabildos) will implement the necessary preventive measures based on each island’s specific circumstances.
Officials urge maximum caution and common sense
Jubera has called for “maximum caution” to prevent any activity that might spark a wildfire. In response to the heat, emergency services recommend staying well hydrated, avoiding strenuous exertion during the hottest hours of the day, and paying particular attention to vulnerable individuals. Those planning to undertake pilgrimages on foot over the coming days are advised to carry sufficient water, avoid walking during peak heat, and stop immediately if they experience any signs of exhaustion or dizziness.
