Weekend heat alert for the Canary Islands
The State Meteorological Agency (Aemet) has warned that temperatures are set to soar again across the Canary Islands this weekend, potentially reaching around 35 degrees in Tenerife, particularly in the metropolitan area. A yellow alert for high temperatures has been issued for Saturday covering that part of Tenerife as well as the whole of Gran Canaria except the north.
For now, with Sunday forecasts still to be fine-tuned, the most uncomfortable conditions will be concentrated during the central hours of the day. Warnings will be lifted at 5pm on Saturday in Tenerife and two hours later in Gran Canaria. Even so, meteorologists point out that nights will remain warm, with temperatures not dipping below 25 degrees in the affected areas: the southern coastline stretching from Candelaria to Santa Cruz de Tenerife.
In Gran Canaria, the mercury will offer even less respite, exceeding 37 degrees during the central hours of the day with minimum overnight temperatures of 26 degrees.
Calima and strong winds set to persist
According to Aemet, even though no warning has been issued for the rest of the islands, the entire archipelago will feel the heat. On Saturday, temperatures are expected to rise slightly – locally moderate in places – with 30-32°C possible on south-facing slopes of the islands.
The calima (suspended dust) affecting the Canary Islands since Thursday will persist throughout the weekend, becoming more significant in the eastern islands in the late afternoon on Saturday. As for the skies, there will generally be intervals of cloud, and weak, isolated showers cannot be ruled out inland on the islands with more rugged terrain. Wind will continue to blow strongly, with Aemet even forecasting locally very strong gusts.
The situation is expected to remain much the same on Sunday, according to Aemet’s forecast, with further heat alerts likely to be issued.
