Wednesday: heat builds across the Islands

Wednesday marks the start of a new warm spell on the Islands. While temperatures won’t reach the extreme highs expected on the mainland, a few spots—particularly inland southern Gran Canaria—could still top 34°C. It is mostly a dry, bright day, with the only real talking point being a touch of calima that may become more visible by Thursday.

General conditions

Skies remain mostly clear across the archipelago. A few scattered clouds will drift through northern areas early on, but the rest of the day should be dominated by sunshine. During the afternoon, some high-level cloud and a hint of Saharan dust may slide over the eastern islands, though no rainfall is expected.

Temperatures hold steady from Tuesday, staying above 30°C in many locations, with a slight rise expected on Thursday. Winds will blow strong from the north-east, with gusts potentially exceeding 70 km/h around the peaks of the more mountainous islands and across the centre and south of the eastern islands. These breezes should ease by tomorrow afternoon.

The Atlantic will be lively. Expect a combined swell in the north and in the channels between Tenerife–Gran Canaria and Tenerife–La Gomera, with waves around 2.5 metres high. The southern coasts will see a rough ocean.

Tenerife

A mostly sunny day, with the most consistent cloud cover hanging around the Anaga mountains. Expect strong gusts at the island’s extremes, while southern mid-altitude areas will see temperatures push past the 30°C mark.

Gran Canaria

Variable cloud cover in the north, but plenty of sunshine elsewhere. A light layer of calima may appear at altitude during the afternoon. Winds remain strong at the extremes, though the capital should see a pleasant high of around 27°C.

Lanzarote

Mostly clear skies, with just a few isolated clouds in the north and west. Strong gusts from the interior south will persist until midday before easing. Arrecife will see temperatures between 23°C and 30°C.

Fuerteventura

Skies clear up from midday onwards. Some high clouds and a trace of calima may drift in from the south during the afternoon. Winds will lose some intensity, while temperatures remain similar to the last few days.

La Palma

Scattered clouds across the north-northeast, but sunny elsewhere. Winds ease by the afternoon. Thermometers will range between 21°C and 27°C.

La Gomera

Gusty conditions in the west and east, especially during the morning, before settling down later. A few clouds in the north, but mostly sunny. Temperatures will sit between 24°C and 28°C.

El Hierro

Another day with very few clouds, perhaps a little more at the start and end of the day. Breezy at the extremes, but temperatures remain stable.

La Graciosa

Some isolated clouds will clear quickly during the morning. Winds also ease by the afternoon, and temperatures stay fairly constant.
