Five French sailors injured after yacht runs aground near Órzola pier
Five French crew members of a yacht have been injured in the early hours of this Sunday in Lanzarote after the vessel they were travelling in ran aground on rocks near the pier at Órzola, in the north of the island, according to sources from the Emergency and Security Consortium.
Three men and two women aged between 20 and 30
The sources said the group consisted of three men and two women aged between 20 and 30. One of them left the boat on foot across the rocky area, while the other four escaped on a life raft and were rescued by firefighters in an inflatable dinghy.
They were then treated by Red Cross staff, as all of them had injuries from blows, although none was serious. The crew members, apart from the one who made his own way ashore, were taken to the José Molina Orosa hospital in Lanzarote.
Cause of the grounding still unknown
According to the sources, the cause of the grounding is not yet known, although they noted that the entrance to Órzola pier is better signposted and that this is not the first time it has happened.
Vessel splits in two and sinks
The sources also indicated that when crews went to the area to check for any fuel spill and to assess how to recover the boat, part of the hull was already submerged and it could not be prevented from sinking completely. The yacht has broken in two and its remains will be difficult to recover, although clean-up work is being carried out in the area, the sources added.
