The Strokes unveil Going Shopping video filmed in Tenerife
New York rock band The Strokes released the music video for their new single Going Shopping on Monday 29 June, the first taste of their upcoming seventh studio album Reality Awaits, due out on 24 July. The band chose a strikingly distinctive location for part of the shoot: Tenerife’s Auditorio de Tenerife.
The video, which is already available on YouTube and the band’s social media channels, stars American actor Walton Goggins, whose presence anchors much of the visual narrative. The piece blends social satire, minimalist aesthetics and visual references to bring the upbeat track to life – a track that travelled to Tenerife and is now set to tour the world.
Architectural icon as a backdrop
The exterior of the Auditorio de Tenerife serves as one of two locations chosen by The Strokes for the shoot, with the rest filmed on an indoor set. Once again, one of the Canary Islands’ most iconic architectural landmarks becomes a film set, appearing in several sequences that show both the distinctive silhouette of the Calatrava-designed building and its immediate surroundings – including César Manrique’s sculpture Homenaje a Santa Cruz, situated between the auditorium and the Parque Marítimo.
The video opens with a night-time shot of the Tenerife auditorium’s silhouette, before cutting to a daytime scene in which Walton Goggins steps into the frame to deliver the song’s opening lines, which he “sings” throughout the entire video.
Local touches and surrealism
Beyond the setting, the video also includes nods to the Canary Islands, with the appearance of bananas that may well have come from nearby Tenerife plantations. The blend of the everyday and the surreal is very much in keeping with the usual aesthetic of the band led by Julian Casablancas.
Going Shopping was released as a single in April 2026 and generated considerable buzz ahead of the new album. The choice of Tenerife as a filming location reinforces the international scope of the production and highlights the island as an ever more popular destination for music and audiovisual shoots.
Fans spot band members on the island
Back in May, several people reported spotting members of the band at various locations across Tenerife. Now, it all makes sense, following the release of The Strokes’ first video from their forthcoming album.
Walton Goggins’ performance adds a distinctive, interpretative edge, and is already drawing the attention of international audiences, who will no doubt also appreciate the chosen setting. The American actor’s role, which shifts between the comic and the unsettling, is woven into a narrative that some fans have interpreted as a critique of consumerism and contemporary social dynamics. Although described as “a simple work on the surface”, followers have also highlighted the thematic intent and symbolism of the newly released footage.
Seventh album on the way
With this release, The Strokes are warming up for what will be their seventh studio album, Reality Awaits – the first since The New Abnormal, released in 2020. Going Shopping was officially released on 7 April following an unusual promotional campaign: the band sent the song on cassette to a hundred fans before making it available on streaming services. Although the album was originally scheduled for release on 26 June, it has been delayed until 24 July.
