Suspect remanded in custody over death of British tourist in Tenerife

The duty court in Arona has ordered one of three suspects arrested in connection with the violent death of a British tourist in Tenerife to be remanded in provisional custody without bail. The decision was taken on Thursday, with the individual facing charges of homicide.

According to the Canary Islands High Court of Justice (TSJC), the same suspect is also accused of minor assault, in reference to injuries suffered by the deceased man’s wife, and of attempted robbery with violence. The other two detainees have been released on provisional liberty as alleged accomplices or accessories to attempted robbery with violence, the TSJC added. However, one of them has been ordered to report to court periodically.

Attack in Los Cristianos

National Police officers arrested three people on 23 June in connection with the assault on a British couple in the south of Tenerife, according to sources from the provincial police station. The 88-year-old husband died two days later. The incident took place in the early evening of Wednesday last week in the Los Cristianos area, when the couple were attacked. During a struggle, the man fell and struck his head.

Paramedics who attended the scene found him in cardiac arrest. They managed to stabilise him and he was taken by ambulance to hospital, where he died two days later. The investigation into the incident is being led by the judicial police brigade in south Tenerife.
