San Juan in Tenerife: a night of fire, sea and tradition
The old folk song goes: ‘Blessed San Juan’s night, lit by bonfires, echoes of the conch shell rolling down the slope.’ San Juan will once again illuminate the shortest night of the year, not without its restrictions, and beyond the census each municipality has carried out to pinpoint the hotspots. Of the 31 municipalities on Tenerife, fewer than half (14 out of 31) are organising parties and have at least one authorised bonfire.
The Cabildo of Tenerife reminds the public that bonfires are generally prohibited in areas at risk of forest fires, except where special authorisations have been granted. It is also forbidden to burn tyres, plastics, varnished furniture or any material that generates polluting gases or poses an explosion risk. Fires must be kept away from homes, power lines and vegetated areas, and organisers are required to notify their respective town halls in advance.
To ensure compliance with these measures, the Tenerife Fire Consortium (Consorcio de Bomberos de Tenerife), the Forest Brigades (Brifor), volunteer firefighters and Civil Protection services will deploy a special operation on the night of 23 June involving more than 150 personnel.
Below is a tour of the municipalities where events have been confirmed.
Arico: two towns celebrating
The San Juan festivities will be present in two locations within this municipality: the Villa de Arico and Las Arenas, where events linked to the patron saint festivities of San Juan Bautista will take place. A number of privately registered bonfires are also planned.
Arona: the highest number of bonfires
Arona is among the municipalities with the highest number of authorised bonfires on Tenerife, with 32 private celebrations between Los Cristianos, Las Galletas and Guargacho. Los Cristianos beach will once again concentrate much of the festive activity. Thousands of people will head to the coastline to enjoy the music, the party atmosphere and the traditional midnight dip.
Candelaria: coast takes centre stage
The coast of the Villa Mariana will once again be the protagonist of the shortest night of the year. The main bonfires will be located at Playa de La Viuda, Las Caletillas and Punta Larga. The most notable celebration will take place at La Viuda, where Marco El Pachanga will perform from 10:00 PM. The combination of music, sea and fire makes this spot one of the busiest in the metropolitan area.
Güímar: beach gathering at Las Eras
Playa de Las Eras will once again become the main meeting point for the municipality. The programme will begin at 8:00 PM with ambient music and the opening of the beach kiosk. Two hours later, at 10:00 PM, the lighting of the bonfire will take place, one of the most eagerly awaited moments of the night.
Garachico: just two authorised bonfires
This year only two bonfires have been authorised: one at La Caleta de Interián and another at El Muelle de Garachico. At the latter, there will be ambient music throughout the evening and one of the municipality’s most popular traditions will be upheld: the midnight bath.
Granadilla de Abona: one of the fullest programmes
In the Chasna region, one of Tenerife’s most complete programmes has been prepared. The town hall has organised two major institutional celebrations: one at Playa Central de El Médano and another at Playa Grande de Los Abrigos. Activities will begin at 6:30 PM with parades and batucada performances by Kuliquitacas del Sur, Guajeiros and Aborasau. Later, DJ Fabrizio Salgado, DJ Javi Plasencia and Los Vándalos will perform.
Guía de Isora: a single beach bonfire
The only authorised bonfire will be located at Playa de San Juan, coinciding with the patron saint festivities of this town. The area will feature music and a party atmosphere throughout the night.
La Laguna: neighbourhood parties across the city
Activities for San Juan will take place in the Padre Anchieta housing estate, the popular neighbourhood of San Juan, as well as in the Aguere and La Punta housing estates. At 6:00 PM, a mass in honour of San Juan Bautista will be sung by the Punta Hidalgo senior citizens’ folk group, followed by a romeria-style procession, and at 10:00 PM, cold sparklers will be set off at the hermitage of the saint.
The Aguere, Acaymo and Las Cañas residents’ association is celebrating the 22nd edition of its San Juan festivities, beginning with a get-together at 6:00 PM, followed by a performance from the parranda Las Mercedes, a paella tasting and the first of the main acts: the Nueva Latina orchestra. The lighting of the bonfire takes place at 9:30 PM, and dancing with the Nueva Latina Orchestra begins at 10:30 PM.
In San Juan square, from 8:30 PM, there will be a ‘paseo del haragán’ (a leisurely stroll) with musical accompaniment, followed by a paella meal at 10:00 PM. Also in Bajamar, the Isogue Pensioners’ Club Association will hold a San Juan party at 10:00 PM.
Puerto de la Cruz: a grand celebration by the sea
The tourist city will once again host one of the great San Juan celebrations in the Canary Islands. The events will begin at 6:30 PM with the traditional parade of the San Juan effigy from the Municipal Market to Playa Jardín, for the first time since its reopening in June 2025. The lighting of the bonfire is scheduled for 10:00 PM. Before that, Caracolas will perform at 9:00 PM, followed by Jeita at 11:00 PM and La Chalana at 1:00 AM, with their tribute to Maná.
The city is also maintaining two of its most emblematic traditions: the decoration of the historic water fountains and the ‘Baño de las Cabras’ (Goats’ Bath), which will take place on the morning of 24 June.
San Juan de la Rambla: patron saint festivities in full swing
The patron saint festivities make this municipality one of the main reference points for San Juan on Tenerife. On the eve, the traditional ‘Resonar del Bucio’ will take place, with participants descending carrying torches and sounding conch shells from the Risco del Mazapé. The following day, the spectacular ‘Encendido del Risco del Mazapé’ will be held, one of the most striking images of popular Canarian festivals, followed by a concert by Los Cantadores.
Santa Cruz de Tenerife: two main festive hubs
The capital will have two major festive hubs. At Los Charcos de Valleseco, the programme will start at 4:00 PM with youth activities, workshops, water inflatables and food trucks. The music will be provided by Iván Cacú y su Orquesta, Son Canari, La Maquinaria Band and La Sabrosa until 12:30 AM. Additionally, the neighbourhood of Acorán will hold its own San Juan party. The programme will begin at 7:00 PM with a performance by the Tropin Orchestra. The bonfire will be lit at 9:00 PM, and half an hour later the street party will continue with David Pérez.
Santiago del Teide: fireworks and a midnight finale
Puerto de Santiago beach will once again become the municipality’s main stage. From 7:00 PM there will be DJ performances, sports activities and a zumba session with Pierre. The bonfire will be lit at 10:00 PM, accompanied by a fireworks display. The party will culminate at midnight with a grand firecracker show.
Tacoronte: a single neighbourhood bonfire
The neighbourhood of San Juan Bautista will host the only authorised bonfire in the municipality. The festive day will begin at 7:30 PM with a Eucharist and subsequent procession accompanied by the Santa Cecilia Band. The celebration will continue in Parque Fray Diego with a performance by the Parranda Los Desconocidos, a popular toast and several pyrotechnic displays.
Tegueste: a special San Juan hiking route
The Tourism Department has organised, by prior registration, a special San Juan route that combines hiking, gastronomy and tradition. The activity includes a guided walk, the lighting of a bonfire and a tasting of potatoes, sweetcorn and ribs.
Towns without San Juan celebrations this year
This year there will be no such celebrations in El Rosario due to cliff stabilisation works at Tabaiba Baja. Bonfires are also not permitted in El Tanque and Vilaflor de Chasna, while in La Orotava the commemoration will be limited to religious acts linked to San Juan Bautista.
