Calm and clear skies on the way
The Canary Islands are set for a stable day on Sunday, with mostly clear or cloudless skies across much of the archipelago. According to the State Meteorological Agency (Aemet), the exception will be the northern parts of the islands, where cloud cover will dominate for some parts of the day. These northern areas should see wide clear spells during the central hours, while the rest of the territory will remain generally cloudless.
Temperatures and wind
Temperatures will see little change along the coasts and will drop slightly inland. Winds will be moderate from the north-east, with strong intervals in low-lying areas of the southeastern and northwestern tips of the mountainous islands. Aemet also points to a low probability of some very strong gusts in Gran Canaria and La Gomera. At higher elevations, winds will be light and variable, except on the high peaks of Tenerife, where moderate south-westerly winds are expected.
Sea conditions
At sea, moderate north or north-easterly winds are expected, with mainly moderate seas that could increase to rough in some areas. A northerly swell of around one metre is also forecast.
Tenerife
On Tenerife, it will be cloudy in the north below 800 to 1,000 metres, with clear spells opening up during the day, except for the far north-east. Elsewhere, skies will generally be clear. Temperatures will remain largely unchanged on the coasts and will drop slightly inland, with falls that could be locally moderate in mid-altitude areas. Winds will be moderate from the north-east, with strong intervals in low-lying areas of the far north-west, the south-eastern slopes and, locally, on the southern side of the metropolitan area. On the peaks, light variable winds, except on the high peaks where moderate south-westerly winds are expected. Forecast temperatures: Santa Cruz de Tenerife: 20 / 27°C.
La Gomera
On La Gomera, cloudy skies will predominate in the north below 700 to 900 metres, though wide clear spells will open up during the central hours. Elsewhere, skies will generally be clear. Temperatures will see little change on the coasts and will drop slightly inland, with more marked falls in the maximums. Winds will be moderate from the north-east, with strong intervals in low-lying areas of the far north-west and east, where occasionally very strong gusts cannot be ruled out. On the peaks, light variable winds. Forecast temperatures: San Sebastián de La Gomera: 20 / 25°C.
La Palma
On La Palma, it will be cloudy in the north and north-east below 800 to 1,000 metres, with wide clear spells during the day, except in coastal areas. Elsewhere, the sky will be clear, with occasional intervals on the west coast. Temperatures will change little, apart from slight drops inland, more marked in the maximums. Winds will be moderate from the north-east, with strong intervals in low-lying areas of the north-west and south-east. On the peaks, light variable winds. Forecast temperatures: Santa Cruz de La Palma: 18 / 24°C.
El Hierro
On El Hierro, it will be cloudy in the north below 600 to 800 metres early and late in the day, tending to partly cloudy for the rest of the day. Temperatures will see little change, apart from slight drops inland. Winds will be moderate from the north-east, with strong intervals in low-lying areas of the south-eastern slopes and far west. On the peaks, light variable winds. Forecast temperatures: Valverde: 17 / 22°C.
Lanzarote
On Lanzarote, it will be cloudy in the north and west. Elsewhere, the sky will remain partly cloudy or clear, with intervals on the coast during the early hours. Temperatures will remain largely unchanged. Winds will be moderate from the north-east, slightly stronger in the afternoon. Forecast temperatures: Arrecife: 19 / 27°C.
Fuerteventura
On Fuerteventura, the sky will be cloudy in the north and along the coasts early and late in the day, tending to partly cloudy for the rest of the day. Temperatures will remain largely unchanged or with a slight rise in the maximums. Reaching 30°C in the south-east is not ruled out. Winds will be moderate from the north-east, slightly stronger in the afternoon, with strong intervals in Jandía and on the south-western coast. Forecast temperatures: Puerto del Rosario: 18 / 25°C.
Gran Canaria
On Gran Canaria, it will be cloudy in the north below 700 to 800 metres early and late in the day. During the rest of the day, it will tend to partly cloudy, except on the north coast, where some intervals will persist. Elsewhere, the sky will generally be clear. Temperatures will see little change on the coasts and slight drops inland, which could be locally moderate. Localised highs of 30°C are possible in the mid-altitude areas of the south-east. Winds will be moderate from the north-east, with strong intervals in low-lying areas of the west and south-east, where occasionally very strong gusts cannot be ruled out, more likely during the afternoon. On the peaks, light variable winds. Forecast temperatures: Las Palmas de Gran Canaria: 20 / 24°C.
