Yellow warning activated for El Hierro

The low-pressure system known as Dana Adam will keep conditions unsettled across the Spanish mainland and the Balearic Islands this Monday, with Alicante and Valencia under a red warning for torrential rain until 10am, and orange warnings in place for Barcelona, Girona, Tarragona, Ibiza, Formentera, Mallorca and Menorca.

In the case of the Canary Islands, the State Meteorological Agency (Aemet) has already announced the first yellow warnings for heavy rain. On this occasion, the warning covers the entire island of El Hierro from 12pm this Monday. It will remain in force until 11.59pm this Tuesday, although it has not been ruled out that it could be extended.

According to the forecast, at least 60 millimetres of rain are expected to accumulate over 12 hours, with heavy showers that may be accompanied by thunderstorms. For now no other island is under a warning, but further alerts have not been ruled out.

Rain to ease in the east and shift towards Catalonia

Over the course of the day the rain will gradually weaken in these areas and move towards Catalonia, where it could be heavy or very heavy and persistent during the afternoon. The whole of Andalusia except Huelva is under a yellow warning for rain and storms, as are Albacete, Lleida, Murcia, Castellón, Ceuta and Melilla, according to the Aemet forecast. The entire Valencian Community is also under warnings for rough seas, with wind warnings in Alicante and Valencia. Castellón is likewise at risk from rain and storms.

During the early hours and first thing in the morning, Sunday’s showers and storms will continue with very strong or torrential intensity in the Valencian Community, the south-eastern coastlines and the Balearic Islands, where very significant accumulations could build up in just a few hours. Very strong wind gusts are also likely in Mallorca. In Andalusia, Ceuta and Melilla, heavy showers with thunderstorms are expected from the early hours. Moderate rain is also likely along the Asturian coast, on the mesetas, and in Aragon and Navarre.

Torrential downpours and up to 400 litres per square metre

According to the special advisory issued by Aemet this Sunday, during the first half of Monday locally very heavy or torrential rainfall will continue along the southern coast of Valencia, around Cabo de la Nao, and on the coastlines of Murcia, Almería and the Balearic Islands. The agency warns that between 300 and 400 litres per square metre could accumulate locally during the episode, without ruling out even higher figures in the worst-affected areas, although it notes that “given the great uncertainty over how the atmospheric structures will evolve, it is not possible to determine precisely which areas will be affected”.

Forecast for the Canary Islands

In the Canary Islands, skies with cloudy intervals and generally moderate showers are expected, with a chance of these being heavy and persistent on El Hierro. Morning fog banks are likely in the mountains of the north and south of the mainland, along with mist in the south-east and the Mediterranean. As for temperatures, maximums will rise in the east, the central area and the Balearic Islands, and fall in the rest of the mainland and the Canary Islands. Minimums will drop across the board, with light frosts in the mountains of the northern half.

Among the provincial capitals, minimums of 2C stand out in Salamanca, León and Ávila. Winds will be predominantly from the north and east across the mainland and the Balearic Islands, moderate on the coasts with a tendency to ease, and light elsewhere. Very strong gusts are likely along the coast of the Valencian Community and the Balearic Islands during the first half of the day. In the Canary Islands, the trade wind will be moderate with a tendency to become light and variable in direction.
