A special bond with the islands
I hold a very special affection for the people of the Canary Islands, and particularly for Tenerife, where I have always been received with such generosity. Over time, I have come to see making and performing music as an offering of gratitude. It is the audience who put me where I am. My talent is the vehicle, but being able to travel so far from home to connect with people who have a genuine bond with what I love most is a wonderful and beautiful life.
Launching the European tour in Tenerife
Yes, this will not only be the start of the European tour, but also the first stage I step onto this year. I have been completely focused on my album, and this concert in Tenerife opens all the shows for this new chapter of the tour. That gives it a very special energy. I have a huge amount of those. There is something very powerful and also Latin about the energy I share with people from the Canaries. You speak to someone from the islands and you do not feel you are so far from home. I remember a previous concert in Tenerife where a young girl came up on stage and we had a beautiful moment together. You could see on her face how significant that moment was for her, and it was just as meaningful for me. That generosity from the people of the Canaries is like a hug.
Sharing the stage with Pablo Alborán
A lot. Diversity always excites me. In this case, Pablo Alborán will be there, whom I love dearly and with whom I have a song. We have shared some really lovely moments. I remember when we first met and connected during the pandemic, recording a video that my wife directed with an iPhone in the bathroom to make it all look similar. Afterwards, we sang together at the Puerta de Alcalá in Madrid in front of a huge crowd. Sharing a festival with someone like him seems really beautiful to me.
The creative process and the new album
I am in the creative process of the album and I can almost see the shore on the other side. I am starting to wrap things up. I am very excited because this summer tour will be a kind of final preview before the album comes out. When I finish the tour of Europe, the album will be released and then the whole universe of what comes next will take off. I am in my creative workshop every day, devoted to that process. This album is becoming something that goes beyond the artistic: it is also a process of self-discovery. I am writing from a very recent role for me, which is that of being a father, and that profoundly transforms who I am. I am learning to see myself again through the eyes of my little girls, who see me every day.
An intimate connection with the audience
I think it is not just a virtue of the concert or the show, but a constant characteristic of my career. There is a familiarity and closeness that has not been entirely planned. It is intentional, but also accidental. At a concert there could be 10,000 people, and still I feel I have a personal encounter with every single person I look in the eye. That happens to me at concerts, with my songs, on the street, on social media, and in the personal things my wife and I have shared throughout our career. I would not want that to change in any way. It is one of the things I love most about my career.
Servant to the songs
I become more and more aware that the songs do not work for me; on the contrary, I am an employee of my songs. I am the singer who gets on stage to sing with my bosses, and those bosses are certain songs with which the audience will have an encounter. Choosing the setlist is one of the things I enjoy least, because I am afraid of leaving out a song that meant something important to someone during a happy or difficult time. Absolutely. When someone tells you what their favourite Camilo song is and explains why, you understand there is something very deep behind it. It is not just a song they like. That is why the setlist has to be a journey made with great respect and intention for the history that the Tribe and I have woven together.
The return to the stage
I am very excited. I can imagine that they are very eager to see me, but I think I am the one who is most excited to see them. We are going to experience my first show of the year, the return after a creative period that monopolised my life and was necessary. It will be about seeing each other’s faces again and celebrating all of that. It will not just be a local gathering: there is a global energy of wanting to get back out there that will crystallise in that concert in Tenerife.
