Tragedy in Fuerteventura: tourist drowns at Ugán beach

Tragedy strikes at notorious Fuerteventura beach

Tragedy struck the south-west coast of Fuerteventura again on Thursday. Emergency services located and recovered the body of a 25-year-old tourist who had gone missing at Ugán beach, an area notorious for its dangerous conditions due to strong waves and sudden tidal changes.

Search operation launched at first light

The search operation was activated from the early hours of Thursday morning after reports that a foreign man on holiday on the island had gone missing. It is believed he became trapped in a cove that he had accessed at low tide. However, the changing sea made his return to land impossible.

All evidence points to the young man being caught out by the rising tide and the strong currents typical of this stretch of the Fuerteventura coastline, ultimately being swept out to sea with no means of escape.

Major air and ground response

The search mobilised extensive emergency resources, both by air and on land. Teams from Salvamento Marítimo (Maritime Rescue), the Civil Guard, the Canary Islands Government’s Emergency and Rescue Group (GES), and other specialist services took part. For hours, three helicopters scoured the coastline in a bid to locate the missing man. These included the Helimer helicopter from Salvamento Marítimo, a Civil Guard helicopter, and a GES helicopter, alongside ground teams deployed in an area made particularly challenging by the rugged terrain and sea conditions.

Body found close to last known location

Despite the swift response from rescue teams, nothing could be done to save the young man’s life. His body was found near the spot where he was last seen.
