School bus crash causes major delays on GC-1 motorway

Crash involving school bus brings GC-1 to a standstill

Traffic on the GC-1 motorway heading towards Las Palmas de Gran Canaria was brought to a near standstill on Tuesday morning following a multi-vehicle crash involving a school bus. The accident occurred near the water treatment plant, one of the busiest stretches of road on the island, causing severe tailbacks not only on the motorway itself but also on several slip roads from Telde and surrounding towns.

Queues now stretch as far as Carrizal, creating significant disruption for thousands of motorists heading into the island’s capital during the morning rush hour. Emergency services rushed to the scene, including firefighters, the Civil Guard, police units, and ambulances from the Canary Islands Emergency Service (SUC).

One woman injured, all children unhurt

According to the Coordinating Centre for Emergencies and Security (CECOES) 112, the crash left one woman with minor injuries. She reported chest pain following the collision and was taken to Hospital San Roque for further assessment. All the children on board the school bus escaped unharmed and did not require medical attention.

Gridlock extends into Telde

The accident has caused major gridlock on Gran Canaria’s main transport artery, with traffic crawling northbound and delays continuing to mount throughout the morning. The congestion has now spread into Telde itself, where many drivers are using the old road as an alternative route, leading to further significant tailbacks in several parts of the municipality.

Emergency and traffic services remain at the scene working to remove the vehicles involved and restore normal traffic conditions as quickly as possible.
