Smoke alert at Tenerife North Airport causes morning delays

Smoke cloud disrupts Sunday morning at Tenerife North Airport

The cloud of smoke that complicated Sunday morning at Tenerife North-Ciudad de La Laguna Airport was already a thing of the past by midday. Apart from some delays to inter-island flights, the facility had returned to normal operations, with no more queues of passengers or security presence.

Passengers caught off guard by connection fears

Some travellers were still shaken, not by the scale of what happened—given that it was a minor incident quickly resolved—but by the knock-on effect on their connections. “I have to make three flight connections and there wasn’t much time between them; thank goodness it’s all sorted,” said Alejandro López, a 21-year-old Tenerife native and Erasmus student.

Evacuation at Los Rodeos

The problem at Los Rodeos, as the airport in La Laguna is popularly known, was detected early on Sunday morning in the boarding area, after which firefighters were alerted. Passengers had to leave the terminal, and the notable crowd gathered outside. The situation generated images like those that reached the phone of Carmen Nieves González, who was heading to Gran Canaria. Hers was a very routine inter-island flight, but fearing she might miss it, she arrived at the airport two and a half hours early.

Airport returns to normal

“I thought it would still be packed with people,” said this resident of Santa Cruz, who was travelling to Telde for a family commitment. “I was here earlier because I came to pick up my son, and now I’ve come to drop off my wife; the situation is nothing like it was before,” described another person who came to the airport with a relative. “It’s normal for people to worry and for a fuss to be made, but you can see it was resolved quickly,” he added.
