History, music and sport: a packed weekend on the island

Tenerife is brimming with activities this weekend as both public and private sectors throw their weight behind keeping the island entertained. From historical events to sporting clashes, via music, tradition and gastronomy, the island offers a frantic few days for anyone willing to get out and about. If you were planning to stay at home, now is the time to check your wardrobe and decide what to wear, because you will not want to miss these events.

Friday 24 July: the Gesta and a fishermen’s dance

The capital of Tenerife will take a major step back in time today with a reenactment of the Gesta del 25 de julio de 1797, the historic British defeat in Santa Cruz. Starting at 9:35pm tonight in the capital’s Barranco de Santos, the reenactment will recreate the events of 229 years ago, culminating in the English surrender at the Palacio de Carta. Both Saturday and Sunday will offer further chances to enjoy 18th-century life, thanks to the period camp set up in the Alameda del Duque de Santa Cruz.

Meanwhile, in the municipality of Candelaria, the festivities in honour of Santa Ana and San Joaquín continue. At the plaza of the same name, the 4th Baile de Pescadores (Fishermen’s Dance), styled “Aquellos bailes de antes” (those dances of yesteryear), takes place from 9:00pm. Performances will come from Son 21, the Orotava orchestra with its singer “Máximo”, and Grupo Canarias. To gain entry, a traditional fishermen’s costume (for both men and women) is essential, as is the purchase of a ticket.

Saturday 25 July: homage to the elderly and a street party

The party continues on Saturday. From 8:00pm, the Plaza de Santa Ana hosts a tribute to the municipality’s older residents, followed by a special concert marking “50 years” of Grupo Achaman. Later, at 11:30pm, the night ends with a verbena street party featuring the Guaracha orchestra and the group Bomba de Fuerteventura.

Sunday 26 July: parade, religious service and football

On Sunday, from 10:00am, the streets of Santa Ana and the historic centre of Candelaria will come alive with a festive parade led by the batucada drummers of Almagec. At 11:45am, starting from the Casa Las Miquelas pottery workshop, a civic procession will carry the banner to the parish church of Santa Ana, where a solemn religious service in honour of the saint will begin fifteen minutes later.

For football fans, CD Tenerife continues its preparations for the return to LaLiga Hypermotion. Los Blanquiazules will play their third pre-season friendly, this time in the south of the island. The 23rd edition of the Sebastián Martín Melo tournament takes place this Sunday, 26 July, at 7:30pm, pitting Álvaro Cervera’s side against CD Marino at the Estadio Antonio Domínguez.

All weekend: the Burguer Fest in La Laguna

La Laguna’s Plaza del Cristo will be the epicentre of quality fast food this weekend, as the Burguer Fest arrives in town. The formula is a proven winner: top-notch burgers, great music and well-known local eateries. On top of that, the festival will also host a series of competitions which kicked off last Thursday and run throughout the weekend.
