An autumn steeped in tradition
Tenerife is gearing up for the coming months with a rich calendar of traditional festivities, including romerías (pilgrimages), baile de magos (traditional dances), baile de taifa (popular open-air dances) and paseos romeros (festive processions) across towns and villages throughout the island. September and October will host the lion’s share of these celebrations, though the programme will stretch well into November before giving way to some of the biggest dates in Tenerife’s festive calendar.
For those keen to soak up the island’s folklore and popular traditions, these are some of the unmissable events scheduled over the coming weeks.
September: the festivities get under way
The calendar kicks off in Güímar on 8 September with the Subida de la Virgen del Socorro (the ascent of the Virgin of Socorro). Four days later, on 12 September, the town will celebrate the Bajada de San Carlos (the descent of San Carlos). On the same day, Las Galletas in Arona will hold its Baile de Magos.
On 13 September, the spotlight falls on the Romería de Benijos in La Orotava, one of the first major pilgrimage events of the month. Several celebrations will be held on 19 September: Arico marks the Bajada de la Virgen de Abona, San Juan de la Rambla stages its romería, and Fasnia hosts the Bajada de Los Roques.
The weekend continues on 20 September with the Romería Barquera de El Médano in Granadilla de Abona, followed by the Subida de la Virgen de Abona in Arico. The September calendar concludes with the Romería de San Miguel in San Miguel de Abona on 26 September, and the Paseo Romero de Chanajiga in Los Realejos the following day, 27 September.

October: a month packed with celebrations
October promises to be one of the busiest months for traditional festivities on the island. The programme opens on 2 October with the Romería de El Toscal in Santa Cruz de Tenerife, alongside the Baile de Taifa de El Socorro in Tegueste and the Baile de Magos de Geneto in La Laguna.
On 3 October, La Laguna stages the Romería de Valle Tabares, followed on 4 October by the Romería de Geneto. Festivities resume on the second weekend of the month, with Tacoronte hosting the Baile de Magos de Barranco Las Lajas on 9 October, continuing the next day (10 October) with the Paseo Romero de Barranco Las Lajas.
The 10 October also brings the Baile de Magos de Las Zocas in San Miguel de Abona and a Baile de Taifas at Barrio Nuevo in La Laguna. On 18 October, romerías return with celebrations in Adeje and La Vega, in Icod de los Vinos. The month draws to a close with the Baile de Taifa de Araya in Candelaria, scheduled for 23 October.

The festive programme continues into November with a handful of events. Igueste de Candelaria will hold its Baile de Magos on 6 November, with the Baile de Magos de San Diego in La Laguna following on 7 November. Güímar will close out the traditional calendar on 15 November with the Paseo Romero de Lomo de Montijo.
The north of Tenerife will also round off the month with the much-anticipated Fiestas de San Andrés, scheduled for 29 and 30 November.
