Swimmer dies off Santa Cruz de Tenerife coast
A 62-year-old man has died this Saturday off the coast of Santa Cruz de Tenerife after being found floating near Playa de Las Gaviotas.
What happened
According to preliminary reports, the deceased was part of a group of swimmers completing a short crossing between Playa de Las Teresitas and Playa Chica. During the swim, the man reportedly fell behind to rest as he headed towards the shore.
Several residents of Playa Chica spotted the swimmer in the water and managed to pull him onto dry land, immediately alerting emergency services.
Emergency response
Officers from the Santa Cruz de Tenerife Local Police, National Police agents, staff from the Canary Islands Emergency Service (SUC), a medicalised ambulance, and Civil Protection volunteers all attended the scene. The mobilised resources confirmed the man’s death at the scene.
Investigation underway
Sources close to the investigation indicate that the main hypothesis being considered by the National Police is that the man may have suffered a cardiac event during the swim. If confirmed, this would be a death by natural causes, although police inquiries and forensic results will determine the exact circumstances of the death.
