Naviera Armas ferry breaks down; passengers delayed in Tenerife

Ferry fault causes major delays

A mechanical fault on a Naviera Armas ferry has delayed dozens of passengers at the port of Santa Cruz de Tenerife. The vessel, the Volcán de Taidia, suffered a breakdown shortly after leaving the Port of Las Palmas on Tuesday morning while en route to Tenerife, according to the Maritime Captaincy.

Passengers left waiting

Passengers who were due to sail at 8:30am were left waiting at the Santa Cruz port until the Volcán de Tagoro arrived at 10:30am to take them onward. Tracking data from the portal Vesselfinder shows the Volcán de Taidia changed course at around 6:05am and headed back to the port in Gran Canaria after the technical issue was detected.

Technical fault confirmed

According to one passenger, those on board were told that a fault had occurred in one of the engines. The ferry returned to its berth in Las Palmas and remains in port. Naviera Armas has stated that the incident was “a minor technical issue of no great consequence.” The company added that it “acted immediately” and replaced the stricken vessel with another, “thereby guaranteeing operations ran entirely as normal.” They also stressed that “everything was resolved on the spot, without affecting the service.”
