Key Milestone in Los Cristianos Port Reinforcement Project

The project to reinforce the outer breakwater at Los Cristianos port has reached a crucial milestone with the placement of the first concrete blocks. This work aims to consolidate repairs carried out following damage caused by episodes of severe waves. The operations are being conducted at night to avoid interfering with the port’s normal schedule, a key strategic maritime connection point in Tenerife.

Project Scope and Funding

The project has a total investment of €5.3 million, of which over €4.5 million is co-financed by the European Union through FEDER funds. The work is expected to be completed during the course of this year. The intervention involves placing 400 concrete blocks, each weighing 30 tonnes. These were manufactured on a plot in the Granadilla Industrial Estate and are being progressively transported to Los Cristianos port.

Phased Construction and Environmental Protections

Prior to starting this phase, almost all of the planned rock armour was put in place last March. This will now serve as the base for the new layer of blocks that will strengthen the breakwater structure. Ports of Tenerife explains that, before these works began, an anti-turbidity barrier was installed to minimise the impact on the marine environment, in compliance with the Environmental Monitoring Plan.

Furthermore, due to environmental constraints, rock armour cannot be dumped into the sea during April, May, June, and July. This coincides with the breeding period of the angel shark, a protected species whose presence in the area requires extreme precautions.
