Landslip on the Famara Cliffside
A landslip measuring approximately 25 metres wide occurred on Tuesday around 1:00 pm on the Montaña de Gayo, located on the Risco de Famara in Haría, according to sources from the Lanzarote Security and Emergency Consortium. The slip, which dragged a large quantity of rocks and dust, took place roughly 40 metres from the summit and spans an estimated 25 metres in width, the same sources confirmed.
Remote location and trail affected
The area is difficult to access and sees little foot traffic, although the incident has affected the Camino de Los Caleteros trail. Firefighters from La Graciosa, along with staff from the Lanzarote Cabildo’s Environment Department and the Haría Local Police, are currently inspecting the zone.
Heavy rain suspected as cause
The suspected cause of the landslip is erosion resulting from repeated rainfall during the past winter.
