Heat alert issued for southern Gran Canaria
The weather is continuing to keep the Canary Islands on its toes, prompting yet another change to official declarations. This time it is Gran Canaria that is being moved from a pre-alert to a full alert for maximum temperatures.
The change, made on the basis of information provided by the State Meteorological Agency (Aemet) and other available sources, and in application of the Canary Islands Specific Emergency Plan for Adverse Weather Risks (PEFMA), will come into effect at 10:00 on Monday 7 September. The measure applies to the southern half of the island, covering the eastern, southern and western slopes.
Temperatures are expected to reach and exceed 35ºC across wide areas of the Tejeda basin, as well as mid-altitude zones and lower areas facing south and west. More locally, particularly in mid-altitude areas and summits in the southern half, temperatures of 39ºC could be reached from Monday, and even 40ºC during Tuesday.
Rest of archipelago remains on pre-alert
The remainder of the archipelago will stay on pre-alert for maximum temperatures due to a warm episode of tropical characteristics, with significant uncertainty as to how it will evolve.
In Tenerife, temperatures of 33ºC are expected widely across the areas covered by the declaration, although exceeding 34ºC in more specific locations cannot be ruled out. From Tuesday, temperatures will rise in the summits and mid-altitude areas of the south and west, where 36ºC could be reached, as could also happen on the southern slopes of the metropolitan area.
In El Hierro and La Gomera, maximum temperatures through Tuesday could reach 36ºC in the southern half of these islands, with particular impact in mid-altitude zones and higher areas.
In La Palma, temperatures will broadly reach 34ºC on Tuesday across the summits and western slopes, rising to 36ºC in El Paso and areas within the Caldera de Taburiente.
In Fuerteventura and Lanzarote, the heat will especially affect the southern half of those two islands, although it could extend northwards through Fuerteventura’s interior depression. Temperatures could reach 36ºC from Monday and even exceed them in more isolated spots, especially through Tuesday and in the southern half of Fuerteventura.
Hot nights add to concerns
Night-time temperatures are also expected to remain high, barely dropping below 25 or 26ºC, particularly in the islands of the province of Las Palmas, which will make rest and overnight recovery difficult.
Heat is not the only phenomenon set to affect the archipelago significantly in the coming days. Rough seas have also prompted the Canary Islands government to declare a pre-alert in Tenerife, La Gomera, El Hierro and Gran Canaria, while wind has placed all the islands on pre-alert. Added to this is the alert for risk of forest fires, also across the entire archipelago.
