EU digital wallet: Canary Islands to get single ID app by 2027

European digital wallet: what is it?

The European Union is pressing ahead with its digital agenda, and one of its key projects is the ‘European Digital Wallet’ – a digital identity wallet that will allow citizens to carry most of their official documents on their mobile phone and use them across member states. The aim is for this tool to become a common system for identification, completing administrative procedures, and verifying personal information securely, without the need for physical documents, from 2027.

How the eID wallet works

“The European Digital Identity Wallet (eID) is Europe’s answer to challenges in the field of identification,” the EU explains. “It will allow users to access public and private services online and offline, store and share digital documents, and create binding signatures.” Furthermore, “member states will make the wallets available to all citizens, residents, and businesses before the end of 2026.” The key advantage is that this wallet integrates all necessary documents into a single platform recognised across every EU country.

What documents will it store?

The digital wallet will be capable of storing a wide range of official documents and certificates, including: the National Identity Document (DNI); driving licence; Social Security documentation; health cards and medical records; academic and educational certificates; banking information and payment systems; and travel-related documentation and bookings. This means citizens will be able to prove their identity or carry out administrative tasks in other European countries using only their mobile phone, and travel or complete formalities without the fear of losing any physical official documents.

What the Canary Islands already have

Although the European digital wallet represents a major step forward, residents of Tenerife and the wider Canary Islands already have similar tools that make it easier to carry essential documents. On the one hand, the MiDNI app allows individuals to present their identity using a digital version of their national identity card. On the other, the MiDGT app enables users to carry their driving licence and vehicle documents in digital format, as well as completing various procedures related to traffic authorities. The difference is that the future European wallet will encompass all these documents in a single platform and will be available in every European Union country.
