Thousands to protest luxury villa project Cuna del Alma in Tenerife

Tenerife braces for new protest against Cuna del Alma development

“2,500 metres are not enough.” Under this slogan, a new demonstration will take place on Sunday in Tenerife against the controversial Cuna del Alma tourism mega-project, which plans to build 420 luxury villas in Puertito de Adeje. The protest is calling for a complete halt to all construction work, not just the work taking place within the coastal protection zone.

Sunday’s march route and key demands

The protest, organised by the Tagoror Permanente group, will begin this Sunday, 26 April, at 11:00 a.m. in Santa Cruz de Tenerife’s Plaza Weyler. The march will pass by the Parliament of the Canary Islands, the Cabildo of Tenerife, and the Government Presidency. Organisers stressed at a press conference that the rally is being held in the capital because it goes beyond the specific case of Cuna del Alma, rejecting what they describe as a “predatory tourism model” that destroys the land and “preys on our people.”

‘No benefit for the island or the archipelago’

Spokespeople for the Tagoror Permanente Rotativo Cuna del Alma insist that this demonstration aims to show once again that the people of the Canary Islands “are against this mega-project” and emphasise that “it will bring no benefit either to the island or to the archipelago.” “Socially, because this is a project built for the rich, where the jobs created will be very few and will be for cleaning and watering their gardens – nothing outside the world of tourism,” they stressed.

Environmental and resource concerns

From an environmental and heritage perspective, they argue that Cuna del Alma “represents nothing more than the destruction of what we had.” They also warned that the development would increase pressure on resources such as water and generate more waste and sewage in a currently virgin area. “This housing development will have 3,600 beds and will mean 200,000 new tourists a year coming to Tenerife. We are talking about a huge amount for an island that is already overwhelmed,” the organisers underlined at the press conference.

Court order partially halts construction

The social and environmental fight against Cuna del Alma has moved beyond the streets and into the courts. This same month, the judge at the Court of First Instance and Investigation Number 1 in Arona ordered the temporary suspension of part of the construction work on the mega-project, promoted by the company Segunda Casa Adeje SL. With this ruling, the magistrate granted the Public Prosecutor’s request to halt the work the company is carrying out in the coastal protection easement zone, where plans include building a buggy car park, a swimming pool, and a restaurant.

Scope of the suspension and further legal action

The court order, as reported by Canarias Ahora, requires the area to be sealed off and a photographic survey of the affected zone to be carried out. This suspension affects 5.2% of plot T2 of Cuna del Alma, which has a total area of 45,000 square metres. The luxury villa project itself occupies a total of 430,000 square metres of land. The private prosecution, brought by the Cultural, Social and Environmental Association Puertito Libre, has requested that the halt be extended to the entire project. The initial legal complaint lodged by the association targets the entire development, alleging suspected offences against land planning and the environment, document fraud, and misconduct in public office in the processing of the initiative.
