Stable start to the week across the Canary Islands
The Canary Islands begin this Monday with generally stable weather, although cloudy intervals are expected in the lower areas of the northern parts of the larger islands. There is also a chance of light, occasional rain on La Palma towards the end of the day, according to the State Meteorological Agency (Aemet).
Tenerife: morning clouds giving way to afternoon sunshine
In Tenerife, the day will be marked by cloud cover in the north during the early hours, which will give way to extensive clear spells from midday onwards. The rest of the island will see mostly clear or partly cloudy skies. Temperatures will see little change across the archipelago as a whole, although a slight rise is possible in some mid-altitude areas.
Around 30°C expected in parts of Gran Canaria
Several areas of the Canary Islands could again approach 30°C, particularly in mid-altitude zones facing south, east and west in Gran Canaria. Aemet forecasts cloudy intervals in northern Tenerife below 700 to 900 metres, with sunshine dominating from the middle of the day onwards. Clear skies are expected on the remaining slopes. Temperatures will remain stable, with a slight rise in maximums at mid-altitudes. In Santa Cruz de Tenerife, thermometers will range between 20°C and 27°C.
Strengthening trade winds this afternoon
As for the wind, it will blow from the northeast with moderate intensity, though it may strengthen during the afternoon on the southeast slope, the far northwest, and the southern slope of the metropolitan area. One of the most notable features of the day will be the strengthening of the trade winds during the second half of the day. Aemet does not rule out locally very strong gusts on the southeast and northwest slopes of the mountainous islands, particularly in Tenerife, Gran Canaria, La Gomera and El Hierro. On the southwest coasts, the sea breeze regime will continue to dominate.
Gran Canaria: clouds in the north, sunshine elsewhere
Gran Canaria will see clouds in the north and sunny conditions elsewhere. Temperatures could locally exceed 30°C in mid-altitude areas of the south, east and west. On La Palma, cloudy intervals are expected in the north and east, with a chance of light rain at the end of the day, particularly on the northern slope. La Gomera and El Hierro will see a mix of clouds and clear spells on the northern slopes, with clearer weather elsewhere.
Lanzarote and Fuerteventura: a bright day ahead
Lanzarote and Fuerteventura will have cloud cover in the north and west during the early hours, with extensive clear spells during the day and stable temperatures. At sea, northerly and northeasterly winds of force 2 to 5 are expected, with intervals of force 6 in some areas. The sea state will be slight to moderate, increasing to rough during the day. On the southwest coasts, variable winds and a slight sea state will prevail.
Temperature summary
Santa Cruz de Tenerife: 20°C / 27°C
Las Palmas de Gran Canaria: 21°C / 25°C
A week of clouds, sun and strengthening winds
The week thus begins in the Canary Islands with a picture of clouds in the north, sunshine across much of the archipelago, pleasant temperatures, and winds that will once again become more prominent as the afternoon progresses.
