Canary Islands Pioneer Shared Tourist Intelligence System
The destinations of the Canary Islands Tourist Municipalities Association (AMTC) are reinforcing their position as leaders in tourism innovation with the development of a shared Tourist Intelligence System (SIT). This pioneering tool integrates over 500 indicators to improve sustainable management, representing a significant advance in how the association’s fourteen member municipalities plan, analyse, and manage tourism activity by incorporating sustainability, efficiency, and forward-planning criteria.
From Data to Actionable Insight
The true utility of this shared intelligence system lies in the contextual interpretation of its more than 500 indicators, a task that must be deeply rooted in the reality of each territory. For this data to transform into effective and understandable working tools, it must reflect the specific needs of the local environment. With this purpose, the AMTC is establishing a framework for close collaboration with key sector associations and entities, which will allow for the validation and enrichment of the information.
This synergy will culminate in the creation of a specialised observatory, tasked with analysing the data and producing strategic reports to aid decision-making by town councils, tourism businesses, and all stakeholders involved in the sustainable development of the Canary Islands destinations.
A Collaborative and Comprehensive Tool
With this initiative, the AMTC places its municipalities at the forefront of tourism governance, consolidating their role as international benchmarks in transforming the tourism model. The system is notable for its collaborative nature, integrating information from the fourteen AMTC municipalities alongside data from external sources such as the Canary Islands Institute of Statistics (ISTAC), the World Tourism Organisation (UNWTO), and INATLAS.
This integration capability provides a complete view of tourism behaviour, facilitating strategic planning, anticipating trends, and improving both the visitor experience and the quality of life for residents.
Twelve Interconnected Modules
The Tourist Intelligence System is structured into twelve interconnected modules that allow for a comprehensive analysis of the main areas of activity. These include accommodation supply and overnight stays, tourist housing, visitor spending, visitor concentration, source markets, hotel profitability, occupancy rates and average length of stay, passenger arrivals at airports, as well as employment and the related business network.
These are complemented by predictive analysis modules that allow destinations to anticipate trends and improve their responsiveness.
Sustainability at the Core
One of the system’s most advanced elements is its sustainability module, which incorporates over 30 specific indicators and allows for data to be cross-referenced with variables related to the territory’s carrying capacity. This tool facilitates precise measurement of tourism’s real impact and progress towards a model that guarantees a balance between economic development, environmental protection, and citizen wellbeing.
The Tourist Intelligence System constitutes a strategic tool for public officials, facilitating policy evaluation, investment planning, and the definition of common strategies based on objective and comparable data.
Leadership Vision for Sustainable Balance
The President of the AMTC and Mayor of Adeje, José Miguel Rodríguez Fraga, stated that “the SIT allows us to rigorously measure the real impact of tourism in our municipalities and adopt responsible decisions to maintain the balance between tourism activity, the sustainability of the territory, and the wellbeing of those who live in it.”
Meanwhile, the Vice President of the AMTC and Mayor of Mogán, Onalia Bueno, emphasised that it “represents a qualitative leap in how tourist municipalities make decisions, as it allows us to move from intuition to evidence.” In this sense, she highlighted that the SIT is key to “prioritising investments, planning services, and anticipating needs, ensuring that tourism development goes hand in hand with the quality of life of the resident population.”
The Association Behind the Initiative
The Canary Islands Tourist Municipalities Association (AMTC) was established in 2016 with the objective of defending the common interests of the Canary Islands’ tourist destinations and strengthening their role in strategic decision-making for the sector. It is currently comprised of fourteen municipalities: Adeje, Arona, Guía de Isora, Mogán, San Bartolomé de Tirajana, Pájara, Puerto de la Cruz, Santiago del Teide, Antigua, La Oliva, Tías, Teguise, Yaiza, and San Miguel de Abona.
The AMTC works to coordinate efforts that allow for a response to tourism challenges, advance towards a sustainable and competitive model, and secure the necessary resources to renew infrastructure and public services. With a future-focused vision, the Association drives projects that reinforce the leadership of tourist municipalities in the Canaries and consolidate tourism as an engine for economic and social development across the entire region.
