Canary Islands top the summer travel charts
The Canary Islands are cementing their status as one of the favourite destinations for both Spanish and international travellers this summer. According to data from the search engine Kayak, Santa Cruz de Tenerife, Las Palmas de Gran Canaria, Arrecife and Puerto del Rosario feature among the most sought-after destinations both domestically and internationally.
Santa Cruz de Tenerife stands out even among other archipelago options, being the most searched-for domestic destination by Spanish travellers and the fifth fastest-growing among international visitors.
Domestic travellers favour island getaways
For Spanish travellers looking to enjoy summer “at home”, the islands remain the big winners: seven of the ten most searched-for national destinations by Spaniards are in island territories, four of them in the Canaries. This reflects the domestic traveller’s interest in enjoying beach breaks without leaving the country.
Santa Cruz de Tenerife leads the ranking, while Las Palmas de Gran Canaria, Arrecife and Puerto del Rosario occupy 3rd, 6th and 8th places respectively.
International appeal and flight price trends
But the Tenerife capital is not only the most sought-after domestic destination for Spanish travellers; it also sits in the top five fastest-growing among international travellers, with a 20% increase in flight searches for this summer compared to last year.
As is well known, interest in the islands is not limited to domestic travellers. Las Palmas de Gran Canaria, Santa Cruz de Tenerife, Arrecife and Puerto del Rosario also feature in the top 15 Spanish destinations most searched for by international travellers this summer.
“Despite the impact that rising fuel costs and the current global context have had on airfares, our data points to a positive scenario for international travellers wanting to visit Spain,” says Natalia Diez-Rivas, commercial director of Kayak for Europe. “According to our latest data, average flight prices to Spain from countries showing the greatest interest in travelling to Spanish destinations recorded drops or stability compared to the previous week, with the exception of Italy. At the same time, for travellers from Italy, the United Kingdom, Norway and France, average flight prices to Spain are below those of last year,” she notes.
Among the source countries showing the most interest in travelling to a Spanish destination this summer, remarkable growth is seen from Canada, Estonia, Brazil, Colombia and Ireland, whose flight searches are growing by double digits compared to last year.
