canary islands sea temperature indicator

New indicator reveals sea temperature rise around Canary Islands

Sea temperature indicator launched

A new statistical indicator has been launched to track the daily average sea temperature off the Spanish coast. Using hourly data recorded by nearly 30 buoys, it also allows analysis of temperature trends since 2005. The highest value recorded in the Canary Islands was 25.78°C on 7 October 2024.

Key measure for climate change monitoring

The Ministry of Transport and Mobility, which launched the indicator through Puertos del Estado, has described this data as “key for analysing and monitoring the effects of climate change on marine ecosystems.” The new indicator, available for consultation at https://indicadoresclima.puertos.es/, allows users to differentiate geographically by marine demarcations established under the Law for the Protection of the Marine Environment, where similar oceanographic conditions prevail.

How the data is compiled

The information is processed to calculate daily averages within each demarcation, and the corresponding statistical value for the national weighted average is also shown, based on each area’s kilometres of coastline. The Ministry notes that changes in sea temperature can affect marine ecosystems, water quality, fishing activity, and certain industrial processes that rely on seawater.

Extensive monitoring network

Puertos del Estado operates an offshore buoy network (deep-water buoys) consisting of 15 measurement stations, a coastal network with 14 measurement stations, 45 tide gauges around the entire Spanish coastline, and a network of high-frequency radars with nine stations owned and managed jointly with other institutions.

National and regional temperature records

According to the data processed so far, the highest value of the indicator nationally was recorded on 25 August 2023, with a temperature of 25.22°C. In 2025, the most recent year with complete measurements, the maximum value was 24.15°C, recorded on 13 August. By geographical area, the highest daily average temperatures recorded are as follows: in the Mediterranean (Levantine-Balearic zone), 28.67°C on 23 August 2023; in the Canary Islands, 25.78°C on 7 October 2024; in the Strait-Alborán area, 25.50°C on 31 August 2024; in the South Atlantic zone, 25.10°C on 18 August 2025; and in the North Atlantic zone, 22.26°C on 25 August 2023.
