Saturday: calima and strong winds for the weekend

Sun and wind this weekend

This Saturday sees a return of calima across the Canary Islands, with warm air lingering in the midlands and a brisk trade wind blowing along the coasts. On Sunday, the Atlantic is expected to get rougher, with waves reaching up to two metres high. Residents and visitors alike should brace for strong gusts of wind, especially in exposed areas.

General conditions

Temperatures remain similar to recent days, still hitting above 30°C in the southern midlands of Tenerife, Gran Canaria and Fuerteventura, though the heat is slightly less oppressive. Low cloud is expected at around 1,100 metres, mainly in the early and late hours of the day. Wind will be the main feature, with gusts potentially reaching 70–80 km/h. This will affect sea conditions, especially on Sunday, when high waves and rough ocean conditions are expected.

Island-by-island forecast

Tenerife

Morning fog could form near the north airport. Low clouds will linger along the north coast at dawn and dusk. Temperatures will be warm, especially in the south.

Gran Canaria

Strong wind gusts are expected in the west and southeast. Calima remains in the upper atmosphere, and the midlands will stay warm.

Lanzarote

In Arrecife, temperatures will range from 22°C to 29°C. Calima continues to blur the sun, giving a hazy feel throughout the day.

Fuerteventura

Cooler than previous days in the capital, with temperatures between 22°C and 30°C. Generally partly cloudy with few clouds overall.

La Palma

Temperatures in the capital range from 22°C to 26°C. The trade winds will be noticeable, and clouds will hold back on the eastern side early in the day.

La Gomera

Temperatures sit between 23°C and 30°C. Strong wind gusts could develop, so it’s worth securing loose items on balconies.

El Hierro

Temperatures will range from 18°C to 23°C. Calima will be noticeable at higher altitudes.

La Graciosa

Calima and scattered clouds are expected. The wind will pick up noticeably on Sunday, with temperatures similar to the other eastern islands.

Plan ahead

With strong winds and a rough ocean forecast for Sunday, it’s best to keep an eye on local conditions if you’re planning outdoor or maritime activities. The calima may also affect visibility and air quality, particularly for those with respiratory sensitivities.
