A taste of the islands in Berlin
May is a month of celebration for Canarians. On the 30th, the islands mark Día de Canarias (Canary Islands Day), a date that holds special significance for residents and an even deeper meaning for those who have emigrated and find themselves far from home. Canarians in Madrid already know this well, with the recently held romería (traditional pilgrimage festival) breaking attendance records. In Berlin, too, the day has been celebrated for years as a chance to unite and share island culture. This year is no exception.
Food, music and community
The Canary Islands in Berlin association has organised an event for 30 May that will feature both island cuisine and music. Attendees will be able to sample typical dishes, including some ingredients brought exclusively from the Canary Islands. Canarian chef Pablo Hernández (@chacho_pablo) will prepare traditional sandwiches, a rare find in Berlin. And, as with any good fiesta, there will also be music with Canarian roots. Singer-songwriter Ángel Ravelo will provide an intimate soundtrack for the afternoon, while Gran Canaria DJs Zoran (from the Mucha collective) and Carlos Cabrera (from the Guayota collective) will play a mix of music made in the Canary Islands, spanning all styles.
Perfect for those living in Berlin
It is a perfect opportunity to enjoy Canarian culture and gastronomy if you live in Berlin. The event will take place at the association’s headquarters at Urbanstrasse 93.
