Gran Canaria tenders €509,514 of works to shore up GC-200 slope
The Cabildo de Gran Canaria has put out to tender, at a cost of €509,514, works to reinforce a slope alongside the GC-200 road, which connects La Aldea de San Nicolás with Mogán. The project aims to prevent erosion of the ground from causing further damage and potentially even causing part of the road to collapse.
Works beside El Hoyo at the exit from La Aldea
The work will be carried out next to the El Hoyo neighbourhood, at the exit from the built-up area of La Aldea in the direction of Mogán. Specifically, it will address a 110-metre stretch of slope lying beneath the road.
The ground has unstable areas and significant erosion caused by rain and wind from low-pressure system Therese. Until now, vegetation had helped to hold the soil in place thanks to the roots of shrubs, palms and other plants covering much of the slope. However, inspections carried out by the Cabildo have detected significant deterioration.
Erosion has already caused ground slips at some points and has affected both the surface of the hard shoulder and the buried water pipes running alongside the road. If the problem continues, the ground could lose further support and compromise the stability of the road.
Micropile screen to stabilise the road
To reinforce the road, the Public Works Service will install a screen of micropiles alongside the edge of the carriageway, on the left-hand side of the GC-200. This is a structure made up of small piles driven into the ground to give it stability and prevent it from shifting.
With this solution, the Cabildo intends to keep the road surface firm and protect it against the advance of erosion. The system will also allow the works to be carried out without the need for expropriations and will reduce the time needed for the job, with the aim of causing the least possible inconvenience to drivers.
Temporary lane closure with alternating traffic
During the works it will be necessary to temporarily close the lane on the left-hand side of the road, in the direction of travel between Mogán and La Aldea. That space will be used to position the machinery and equipment needed to carry out the project. The right-hand lane, heading towards La Aldea, will remain open at all times to allow vehicles to pass in alternate directions. According to the Cabildo, a clear width of more than 3.20 metres will be guaranteed along that stretch.
Bids open until 21 October
Companies interested in carrying out the works may submit their bids until 21 October. Once that deadline has passed, the Cabildo’s Contracting Committee will begin the process of awarding the contract. The island authority expects the contract to be awarded and the works to begin during the first quarter of 2027. The expected timescale for completing the works is four months.
