Heatwave refuses to ease in the Canary Islands
The mass of hot air affecting the whole of Spain is also taking its toll on the Canary Islands, which will not feel the relief that is already arriving on the mainland thanks to a pocket of cold air that has begun to sweep down from the north of the country, causing a sudden drop in temperatures there. Several thousand kilometres to the south, the Canary Islands will not feel that freshening effect, and will continue to experience high temperatures for several more days: first they will dip slightly, before rising again towards the weekend. However, despite the heat, some rain is expected to appear—but the bad news is that the calima will persist. This is the forecast from the State Meteorological Agency (Aemet) for the coming days in the Canaries, with temperatures continuing to hover around 30 degrees in the island capitals.
Wednesday: yellow alert continues
A yellow alert for maximum temperatures remains in force on the west, south and east-facing slopes of Gran Canaria and in the southern interior of Fuerteventura. The rest of the islands are no longer under any warnings.
In terms of the forecast, Aemet points to skies that will be partly cloudy to clear, with cloudy intervals in low-lying areas of the north of the islands, especially in the final hours of the day. There will still be light calima in mid-elevation areas and on the peaks, more significant on slopes facing south and east.
Temperatures will fall slightly, more noticeably in the maximums on Lanzarote and Fuerteventura and on the southern slopes of the central islands. Locally, 34°C may still be reached or exceeded in the south of Gran Canaria and Fuerteventura, with 32–34°C in the south of the remaining islands. Winds will be from the northeast, occasionally strong in coastal strips on the southeast and northwest. In mid-elevation areas and on the peaks, winds will be light to moderate from the east, tending to come from the north from the afternoon onwards.
Thursday: drizzle possible in the north
On Lanzarote and Fuerteventura, skies will be clear except during the early hours in the north, where it will be cloudy. On the remaining islands, it will generally be partly cloudy, tending to overcast in the north from the afternoon, when there is a low probability of weak drizzle, mainly in mid-elevation areas.
Minimum temperatures will fall slightly to moderately, while maximums will change little on the coasts or fall slightly, with a more notable drop in mid-elevation areas and on peaks. It is still expected that 30°C will be reached locally in the southeast of Lanzarote and Fuerteventura, and in mid-elevation areas in the south and west of Gran Canaria.
Winds will be moderate from the northeast, with strong intervals in low-lying areas of the southeast and west-facing slopes, where there is a low probability of very strong gusts. In the central peaks of Tenerife, strong northwesterly winds are expected.
Friday: cloudy north and possible weak rain
In the north of the mountainous islands, cloudy skies will dominate with probable weak and occasional rain during the early hours. In the easternmost islands, cloudy intervals are expected without ruling out some weak and scattered rain in the north. Elsewhere, it will generally be partly cloudy, with intervals of cloud development on south and southwest-facing slopes during the central hours of the day.
Temperatures will fall slightly to moderately on the mountainous islands, and will see little change or a slight drop on the easternmost islands. Winds will be moderate from the northeast, with strong intervals on the southeast and northwest-facing slopes of the mountainous islands.
Saturday: temperatures start to climb again
On the easternmost islands, skies will be partly cloudy with calima at altitude. On the mountainous islands, cloud will build in the north, tending to break up into intervals during the day. Elsewhere, it will be partly cloudy with calima affecting the peaks.
Minimum temperatures will change little or rise slightly on the eastern islands. Maximums will rise slightly, possibly moderately in inland areas. Winds will be moderate from the northeast, with strong intervals on the southeast and northwest-facing slopes of the mountainous islands.
