Direct shipping route to return to Fuerteventura

The Cabildo of Fuerteventura has announced this Saturday the restoration of the direct maritime connection between the island and mainland Spain, a long-standing demand made by the island’s president, Lola García, the majorero town councils and the Chamber of Commerce.

García reported in a statement that on Friday she received a notification from the Directorate General of the Merchant Navy confirming that it is working to accelerate, as quickly as possible, the processing of the tender for the management of this maritime route of public interest, and that the forthcoming tender will include a stop in Fuerteventura.

A fair and strategic demand

Lola García has highlighted the work carried out by the majorero authorities to ensure that what she describes as a fair, necessary and strategic claim for the present and future of the island is fulfilled.

The removal of the direct maritime connection with the mainland has increased shipping costs by between 70 and 78 percent, she noted. “In an insular and peripheral economy such as Fuerteventura’s, the extra costs are borne directly by the final consumer or by small and medium-sized enterprises, placing the island at a clear disadvantage,” she added.

She therefore hopes that the stop in Fuerteventura will indeed be included as a Public Service Obligation (PSO), as has been requested given its importance, and that the tender process will be expedited.
