TF-5 expansion to begin in November
The TF-5 expansion project, which involves building a third lane connecting Guamasa with Los Rodeos airport in the downhill direction towards Santa Cruz, will get under way in November once the site handover document is signed next week. The details were presented to journalists by the president of the Cabildo de Tenerife, Rosa DΓ‘vila, and the director general of road infrastructure, Rosana MeliΓ‘n, who stressed the need to ask drivers for “patience” over possible delays, although they made clear that the two existing lanes will not be lost.
Round-the-clock working and almost three years of roadworks
Workers will operate 24 hours a day, and the initial phase will include surveys of the road to secure supplies and the construction of the links β the Los Rodeos bridge will be demolished β while the main trunk of the road will be left until the end. The works have a budget of around β¬58 million, will last almost three years and have been awarded to the joint venture formed by Ferrovial ConstrucciΓ³n, S.A. and Asyota Asfaltos y Obras, S.L. The Cabildo has not revealed what the future holds for the abundant vegetation, made up of large canary palm trees and other trees, that lines the edges of the motorway.
More than 110,000 vehicles a day
DΓ‘vila explained that the TF-5 carries more than 110,000 vehicles a day, reaching 12,000 an hour during the morning peak, which is why she believes it is “essential” to push ahead with this project to improve mobility on the island. She noted that the two lanes of the motorway will remain open, as will the adjacent roads β the TF-252 and TF-235 β which are also under “a lot of pressure”, while reiterating that there will be “drawbacks” and “disruption” during the works. “Even though we try to minimise the impact on traffic and all the lanes in both directions will stay open, there will undoubtedly be machinery, and this creates that effect of drivers looking at the works or lanes narrowing, which can affect traffic, and the number of vehicles is not going to fall,” she said.
Coordination with Aena and the town halls
MeliΓ‘n stressed that coordination is “essential” for the works to progress well, and for that reason there will be technical monitoring meetings with Aena, the town halls most involved, the Cabildo and the Directorate-General for Traffic so that the public is “informed” at all times. Mayors and municipal mobility chiefs from the town halls along the route of the TF-5 have been invited to the meeting, along with representatives of sectors linked to transport and economic activity, including the Santa Cruz de Tenerife Chamber of Commerce, the Provincial Confederation of Business Owners of Santa Cruz de Tenerife, professional associations, and representatives of the Local Police and the Civil Guard, among other groups.
