Dozens of people gathered in Puerto de la Cruz on Saturday for a demonstration called by the Platform Tenerife with Palestine, protesting against Israel’s participation in the U18 Women’s Water Polo World Championship, which has been held in the Tenerife town since 16 August and concludes this Sunday, 23 August.
Protest at solidarity mural
The protest took place in front of the solidarity mural with Palestine located at the rear of the Manolo Santaella stadium, next to Playa Jardín. The demonstration was backed by various associations, groups and organisations, including Canarias con Palestina and the Solidarity Network against the Occupation of Palestine (Rescop).
“Normalising” Israel’s image
During the gathering, the Platform Tenerife with Palestine expressed its rejection of Israel’s official participation in the championship and criticised the International Swimming Federation and the Spanish Federation, with the collaboration of the Canary Islands Government, the Cabildo of Tenerife and Puerto de la Cruz Town Hall, for allowing its presence in the tournament.
Organisers said that Israel’s participation in sporting events contributes, in their view, to projecting an image of normality and to “whitewashing” the international image of the Israeli state while the conflict in Gaza continues. They also argued that the presence of an Israeli team in international competitions is incompatible with the defence of human rights, peace and freedoms.
