Garachico once again becomes the meeting point this week for students, musicians and professionals of jazz and modern music with the celebration of the XIV International Seminar Tenerife Jazz Camp. The initiative, organised by Jazzin’ The Island Producciones, has established itself as one of the main formative events in the Canary Islands’ musical calendar.

A pioneering project born in 2011

Founded in 2011 as the first Jazz and Modern Music Seminar in the Canary Islands, the project evolved four years later to become the first Jazz and Modern Music Campus in the islands. Thirteen editions on, the Tenerife Jazz Camp presents itself as an artistic residency and a space for training, creation and musical research, open to participants of all ages and with a complementary programme aimed at the general public.

Throughout its celebration, which will run for the whole week, Garachico will host an agenda combining masterclasses, group classes, concerts and jam sessions, as well as the traditional closing concert, in which the students themselves will showcase the results of the work developed during the artistic residency.

Learning alongside prestigious professionals

One of the main values of the Tenerife Jazz Camp lies in the opportunity for participants to share learning, experiences and creative processes with musicians and teachers of recognised local, national and international prestige. Across its different editions, the campus has featured professionals linked to some of the most important modern music institutions and schools, such as Liceu and ESMUC in Barcelona; Musikene in the Basque Country; the Berklee College of Music, with campuses in Boston and Valencia; and the Conservatorium van Amsterdam, as well as artists with professional careers developed on international stages and circuits.

This combination of specialised training and artistic coexistence is one of the project’s defining features. Direct contact between students and professionals allows for the sharing of knowledge and experiences that go beyond the classes themselves, fostering networking, the exchange of ideas and the development of new musical projects.

Artistic direction and a unique setting

The artistic direction and coordination of the Tenerife Jazz Camp is led by Canarian musician and creator Kike Perdomo, one of the islands’ artists with the most extensive international career and projection. He has championed the initiative since its origins, with a focus on strengthening training and professionalisation within the Canary Islands’ music sector.

The unique character of the Tenerife Jazz Camp is also closely linked to its location. Garachico hosts the entire residency, turning its spaces and surroundings into a meeting point between music, culture, nature and coexistence over these days. The choice of Garachico reflects a conception of the project that goes beyond strictly musical training.

The campus aims to help incentivise and boost the cultural activity of the municipalities and highlight the heritage, landscape and identity of the towns, while generating a shared experience that allows participants to discover the surroundings through music, gastronomy and local culture.

The Tenerife Jazz Camp is conceived as a meeting space for emerging artists and professionals, where teaching is combined with experimentation and the development of creative processes. The residency offers participants the chance to learn, share, research and develop new musical proposals within an artistic coexistence setting, while contributing to the strengthening of the islands’ cultural and professional sector.
