Canary Islands heat alert: temperatures to hit 38C

Heat alert declared for Canary Islands

The Canary Islands government, through its Directorate General for Emergencies, declared a heat pre-alert on Tuesday, with maximum temperatures forecast across the entire archipelago from 11:00am on Wednesday 29 July 2026. The decision was taken in light of information provided by the State Meteorological Agency (AEMET), which has already issued orange warnings for the island of Gran Canaria, alongside other available sources and under the Canary Islands Specific Emergency Plan for Adverse Weather Phenomena (PEFMA).

Eastern islands to feel the heat first

According to forecasts, a multi-day hot spell is expected, beginning on Wednesday and initially affecting the eastern islands most severely, particularly Gran Canaria. The situation is set to intensify and gradually spread to the rest of the archipelago from Friday and over the weekend. Meteorological models analysed show a consistent trend towards the arrival of a hot, dry air mass of African origin.

Temperatures could reach 38C

Maximum temperatures of 34C or higher are expected in inland areas and mid-altitude zones facing south and west in Gran Canaria, where readings could approach 38C by the start of the weekend. Temperatures of up to 33C are forecast in inland areas of Fuerteventura, and between 32 and 33C in inland parts of Tenerife. The regional government added that the episode may later extend to other islands.

Calima and low thermal inversion

The hot spell will be accompanied by a low thermal inversion, initially at around 400 metres in Gran Canaria and between 500 and 700 metres in the western islands, with a tendency to drop progressively. This will create warm, dry conditions in mid-altitude and higher areas. The arrival of African air may also bring a light calima, primarily to the eastern islands, though no significant concentrations of dust at surface level are expected initially.

Ongoing monitoring and possible escalation

Given the expected duration of the episode and the evolution of the models, authorities will carry out continuous monitoring. The alert level may be raised or the affected areas modified depending on updates to weather forecasts and warnings issued by AEMET.
