Three earthquakes recorded in Canary Islands this weekend

Earthquakes recorded off Fuerteventura and El Hierro

The National Geographic Institute (IGN) has recorded three seismic movements in the Canary Islands over the past few hours. Two of them occurred in the Atlantic Ocean, northwest of Fuerteventura, while the third was detected in the municipality of Frontera on the island of El Hierro.

First tremor on Sunday morning near Fuerteventura

The first seismic movement took place during the early hours of Sunday 12 July, specifically at 00:33 hours. According to IGN data, it reached a magnitude of 3.2 and had its epicentre in the Atlantic Ocean, northwest of Fuerteventura, at a depth of 15 kilometres.

Several hours later, in the early hours of Monday 13 July, the institute recorded a second earthquake in the same area. This tremor occurred at 03:22 hours, with a magnitude of 2.1 and a focus situated at a depth of 7 kilometres.

Low-magnitude tremors common in volcanic archipelago

Low-magnitude earthquakes are relatively common in the archipelago due to its volcanic origin, and in the vast majority of cases, they go unnoticed by the population.

Third earthquake detected on El Hierro

In addition to the tremors registered near Fuerteventura, the IGN detected another earthquake on the island of El Hierro. The movement occurred at 01:26 hours on Monday in the municipality of Frontera, located in the west of the island. It reached a magnitude of 2.0 and originated at a depth of 38 kilometres.

Constant seismic monitoring in the Canary Islands

The National Geographic Institute maintains constant monitoring of seismic activity in the Canary Islands, a region where these phenomena form part of the archipelago’s geological dynamics.
