Canary Islands and Turkey strengthen ties with new meeting

Canary Islands and Turkey push forward with new cooperation talks

The Government of the Canary Islands has taken another step in strengthening its relationship with Turkey. Regional President Fernando Clavijo held a working meeting with Turkey’s ambassador to Spain, Nüket Küçükel Ezberci, aimed at consolidating the cooperation that began after the diplomatic mission’s recent visit to the archipelago and opening up new avenues for collaboration between the two territories.

Key meeting in Madrid

Also taking part in the meeting were the director of Turkish Airlines and the honorary consul of Turkey in the Canary Islands, Rubén Fontes. The discussions focused on strengthening institutional, economic, and business links between the Canary Islands and the Eurasian country. During the talks, those present reviewed the commitments made during the recent official visit of the Turkish Embassy to the Canary Islands, a meeting that laid the groundwork for intensifying relations between both administrations.

Strategic sectors on the agenda

The regional government stressed that the aim is to continue developing joint projects that foster cooperation in areas strategic to the islands. Key lines of work discussed include boosting business relations, strengthening air connectivity, and exploring collaboration opportunities in sectors such as tourism, logistics, and investment. The presence of Turkish Airlines representatives at the meeting also reflects the interest in further tightening the connection between the Canary Islands and Turkey, particularly as the archipelago seeks to establish itself as a bridge between Europe, Africa, and the Americas.

Part of a wider international push

This meeting forms part of the regional government’s strategy to expand the Canary Islands’ international presence and forge alliances with markets considered strategic for the islands’ economic development. Held in Madrid, the talks continue the institutional contacts initiated during the Turkish Embassy’s official visit to the archipelago and represent a further step forward in the shared roadmap for strengthening relations between the two territories in the years ahead.
