Tenerife’s largest natural beach
La Tejita beach, in the municipality of Granadilla de Abona, is the largest natural sandy beach in Tenerife. Located in the south of the island, right next to the Montaña Roja Special Nature Reserve, this stretch of sand stretches for over a kilometre and has become one of the most popular coastal spots for locals during the summer months.
An iconic landscape shaped by a volcano
Its image is unmistakable. On one side rises Montaña Roja, an ancient volcanic cone with reddish hues that towers over 170 metres high and completely defines the landscape. On the other side, the beach opens out onto the Atlantic, wild and natural in appearance, windswept for much of the year, and very different from the busier urban beaches of Tenerife.
La Tejita lies between El Médano and Los Abrigos. Its location, adjacent to a protected natural area, has allowed it to remain almost unchanged. You cannot drive directly onto the sand, but there are car parks along the road from El Médano to Los Abrigos, and several paths that will take you to the beach in just a few minutes. It is also accessible by bus.
Wind, waves and wide-open spaces
The wind is one of La Tejita’s defining features. For this reason, although it is a quiet beach in terms of crowds, it is not always comfortable for spending a full day sunbathing. However, it is ideal for those who enjoy surfing, bodyboarding, windsurfing or kitesurfing.
The beach also has a designated nudist area, located at the end nearest to Montaña Roja. This side of the beach offers a greater sense of privacy and attracts those seeking a quieter swim.
Basic services, natural feel
Although the beach is not highly developed, La Tejita does offer some basic services, including bins, cleaning, sun lounger hire, parking and a connection to the intercity bus network. It is easy to access on foot, although it is not adapted for people with reduced mobility.
