British tourist, 88, killed in Tenerife robbery; suspect jailed

Suspect remanded in custody over Tenerife tourist death

The alleged perpetrator of the violent death of an elderly British tourist during a robbery last week in Tenerife was yesterday sent to prison on provisional remand, without bail. The 34-year-old Senegalese national and one of his accomplices already had previous convictions for other violent offences.

Charges include homicide and attempted robbery

The judge, currently serving as duty magistrate at the Court of First Instance in Arona, has charged him with the homicide of the 88-year-old man, in conjunction with charges of causing minor injuries to the victim’s 79-year-old wife, as well as a third charge of attempted robbery with violence by means of a “bag snatch.” The decision to remand the primary suspect in custody was made by the judicial authority based on evidence provided by officers from the National Police’s Personnel Group at the South Tenerife police station, who led the investigation, and after the three arrested individuals were brought before the court.

Two other suspects released on bail

The other two individuals arrested by the same Judicial Police team were a 20-year-old Venezuelan national and a 36-year-old man of Cuban origin. The judge has charged both of them with complicity or necessary cooperation in the attempted robbery with violence. They have been released on provisional bail pending trial, according to the communications office of the High Court of Justice of the Canary Islands (TSJC). The young Venezuelan man will reportedly be required to sign in periodically at the court (apud acta).

The fatal attack on a British couple

According to the court ruling, the Senegalese man approached the elderly British couple to snatch their belongings. When they resisted the robbery, a struggle ensued, during which the thief pushed the tourist, who fell to the ground and suffered a severe blow to the head. Meanwhile, the two Latin American men were reportedly waiting in a car nearby, ready to flee at high speed. The African man and the Venezuelan were arrested in El Fraile, the neighbourhood in Arona where they live. Both the alleged perpetrator of the homicide and the young Venezuelan have previous police records for a number of earlier bag-snatch thefts.

Victim named as Ray, died two days later

The violent robbery and assault on the British citizen, identified as Ray, took place in the afternoon of Wednesday, 17 June, near the Victoria Court II apartment complex on Calle Asomada del Morisco. Following the serious head injury, the tourist went into cardiorespiratory arrest. However, minutes later, ambulance paramedics managed to revive him using basic and advanced cardiopulmonary resuscitation. He was admitted to hospital in a serious condition but died two days later. The investigative work carried out by the Personnel Group of the Judicial Police Brigade led to the identification, location, and arrest of the three individuals allegedly involved in these criminal offences.
