Casa Egón: Tenerife’s oldest bakery with a century of history

A century of sweetness born from war

The story of the oldest pastry shop in the Canary Islands does not begin with a business plan or a food trend, but with a war, an unexpected journey, and a young German confectioner who ended up making Tenerife his permanent home. More than a century later, Casa Egón, in the Tenerife municipality of La Orotava, continues to produce sweets using recipes passed down through generations since 1916.

This iconic establishment, now also known as the Taoro restaurant, has become a historical and gastronomic landmark in the Canary Islands. Its story has recently been rediscovered by new audiences thanks to a visit from content creator Corina (@Corina2G), who shared her experience on social media after sampling some of its most traditional products.

From German refugee to Tenerife baker

The origins of Casa Egón date back to 1914, when Egon Alfred Wende Bard, a young German confectioner, made a stopover in the Canary Islands during a voyage. The outbreak of the First World War completely changed his plans. Unable to return to his homeland, he settled in Tenerife, where he requested political asylum and decided to start a new life.

What began as a small family workshop has now passed through four generations of relatives and continues to draw both locals and tourists who discover a piece of living history inside its walls. The founder’s great-grandchildren currently run Casa Egón, maintaining the pastry-making tradition with century-old recipes while also incorporating new offerings that surprise visitors.

A living museum of flavour

The business has preserved its original atmosphere, with wooden display cabinets, a family-friendly ambience, and the feeling of stepping into a place where every sweet has a century-old story. Today, part of the premises also serves as a restaurant, offering wine from the family’s own vintage.

Casa Egón is located at number 5 Calle León in La Orotava, on a narrow, steep street that sees a steady stream of visitors daily, all in search of a good dessert or a sweet treat at any time of day.

A sweet surprise that went viral

The Madrid-based content creator shared with her followers the experience of tasting Casa Egón’s delicious pastries. She ordered an assortment that included the popular apricot mille-feuilles, a glazed ring cake, a pistachio-filled puff pastry, and the classic almond sweets. She described these pastries as “amazing,” not only for their “incredible” flavour but also for the generous portions. Furthermore, their affordable prices also catch the attention of those who stop by to try them.

More than a bakery, a living tradition

Casa Egón retains the atmosphere of old-fashioned confectioneries, with wooden display cases, a family atmosphere, and the sensation of entering a place where every sweet has a hundred-year-old story. More than a hundred years after its founding, Casa Egón is not just a pastry shop, but a meeting point and a must-visit in La Orotava, where tradition, history, and flavour come together in every bite.
