Pope Leo XIV in Tenerife: full itinerary for June 12

Just 21 days to go

There are just 21 days left until Pope Leo XIV visits Tenerife. On Friday June 12, the pontiff will spend time on the island as part of his apostolic journey to Spain, which runs from June 6 to 12 and also includes stops in Madrid, Barcelona and Gran Canaria. The Tenerife leg will be the last of his trip to the country, lasting around six hours before he returns to Rome.

A socially focused visit

The planned programme includes arrival at Tenerife North–Los Rodeos Airport, a visit to the Las Raíces reception centre, an event in Plaza del Cristo in La Laguna, a motorcade in the popemobile through Santa Cruz de Tenerife and a final mass at the Port of Santa Cruz. The visit will have a strong social focus, particularly events linked to the care of migrants and organisations working on integration.

Friday’s schedule in detail

The day will start early on Friday. Pope Leo XIV will depart at 8:30am from Gando air base in Gran Canaria, heading to Tenerife. His arrival at Tenerife North Airport is scheduled for 9:10am, where he will be welcomed by the Bishop of Tenerife, Eloy Santiago, and various civil authorities. From the airport, Leo XIV will be taken in a security convoy to the Las Raíces emergency humanitarian reception facility in La Laguna. He is not expected to use the popemobile on this stretch.

At 9:30am, the pontiff will hold an meeting with migrants staying at the centre and with staff working there. He will deliver a short address, reflecting how migration is one of the key themes of his time in the Canary Islands.

Plaza del Cristo gathering

After the visit to Las Raíces, the Pope will head to Plaza del Cristo in La Laguna. At 10:10am, he will take part in an event with Church organisations and groups involved in integrating migrants. The square has an expected capacity of around 4,000 people, although about 1,500 participants are anticipated for this gathering. Among them will be representatives from social projects and organisations such as the Buen Samaritano Foundation, Cáritas Tenerife, the La Restinga care and reception centre and the Don Bosco project. The event will last around 40 minutes and is expected to include several short prayers as well as a theatrical performance by migrants.

A close encounter in La Laguna

From 10:50am, Leo XIV will travel in a small vehicle along Calle Viana and part of San Agustín. This section is planned as a more intimate encounter with vulnerable people cared for in Church centres, including the sick, the elderly, those living in poverty and people with disabilities. The route will include a brief stop at the Palacio Salazar, the seat of the Bishopric of Tenerife. The pontiff will stay there for about half an hour, using the break to greet authorities and pastoral workers.

Papal motorcade through the capital

After the stop at Palacio Salazar, the Pope will head to the Los Llanos port esplanade in Santa Cruz de Tenerife, where he will preside over the farewell and thanksgiving mass. Following his time in La Laguna, the convoy will travel along the TF-5 motorway towards Santa Cruz. Near Colegio La Salle-San Ildefonso, the pontiff will board the popemobile for a drive through several streets in the capital. The planned route will go over Puente Galcerán, past Plaza Militar, Plaza de Weyler, Méndez Núñez, El Pilar, Villalba Hervás, Plaza de España, Avenida de Anaga, Bravo Murillo and around the Port of Santa Cruz de Tenerife. This is expected to be one of the most eagerly awaited moments for the public, as it is the stretch where the most people will be able to see the pontiff during his stay on the island.

Closing mass and departure

At 12:15pm, Leo XIV will preside over a mass at the port area of Santa Cruz de Tenerife. This will be the eucharist that concludes his apostolic journey to Spain, after visiting Madrid, Barcelona, Gran Canaria and Tenerife. The service will be concelebrated by the Bishop of Tenerife, Eloy Santiago, who will deliver the final speech of thanks for the pontiff’s visit on behalf of the Spanish Church. The farewell ceremony is scheduled for 2:30pm at Tenerife North–Los Rodeos Airport. The Pope’s plane will take off at 3:00pm for Rome, with arrival at Fiumicino International Airport expected at 8:10pm, according to the schedule released by the Holy See.
