Gran Canaria joins International Museum Day celebrations
The Cabildo of Gran Canaria is joining the celebration of International Museum Day, which falls on 18 May, with a programme encompassing exhibitions, concerts, guided visits, educational activities, and immersive experiences across the island’s museum centres. The island’s government explains that the offer has been designed for all audiences and is aligned with this year’s theme proposed by the International Council of Museums (ICOM): “Museums uniting a divided world.”
Programme kicks off with institutional event on 16 May
The programme begins with an institutional event to be held on Saturday 16 May at 7.00 PM in Plaza del Pilar Nuevo in the capital of Gran Canaria, coinciding with the European Night of Museums. This public gathering, open to all citizens, aims to serve as a space for collective reflection on the role of museums in contemporary society. The event will include the reading of the International Museum Day manifesto, with participation from institutional representatives, heads of the Museum Service, and directors of the various museum centres across the island.
Peace-themed concert to close the evening
The day will culminate with the concert “Acordes de paz” (Chords of Peace), performed by singer Mari Carmen Segura, flautist Paulina Niemczycka, timple player Abraham Ramos, and guitarist Kevin González – a musical journey that appeals to empathy, coexistence, and hope as fundamental values. The Cabildo’s statement highlighted the theme of this edition, which aims to “emphasise the role of museums as spaces capable of building bridges between cultures, generations, and communities, fostering dialogue, inclusion, and the construction of a shared memory.”
Island-wide museum network takes part
The island’s museum network – consisting of Casa de Colón, Casa-Museo Pérez Galdós, Casa-Museo León y Castillo, Casa-Museo Antonio Padrón, the Centro de Arte Indigenista, Casa-Museo Tomás Morales, and the Museo y Parque Arqueológico Cueva Pintada – are all joining the commemoration with specific programming at each of their venues.
