Two hikers airlifted to safety in Gran Canaria rescues

Helicopter rescues for two hikers on Gran Canaria

Emergency crews had an intensive day on Sunday, with two hikers requiring rescue by helicopter after falling in separate incidents on Gran Canaria. One woman was rescued from the El Chorrillo area in Tejeda, while the other was airlifted from the Barranco del Gamonal in Santa Brígida, according to the 112 emergency services coordination centre.

Coordinated rescue in difficult terrain

The operation in the Barranco del Gamonal required a coordinated response involving local police, firefighters from the San Mateo consortium, medical staff from the Canary Islands Emergency Service, and the helicopter crew from the GES (Emergency and Rescue Group). The area was particularly difficult to access, making the assistance of two local residents invaluable. José, a petrol station employee, and his wife Fabiola, who both know the area well, helped emergency services locate the injured hiker and facilitate her airlift extraction after she had received initial treatment from the response team deployed by 112.

Second hiker airlifted to hospital

The other casualty was a 59-year-old woman who suffered a fall while hiking in the El Chorrillo area of Tejeda. The incident occurred around 1pm, and crews from the Canary Islands Emergency Service were dispatched to the scene. The hiker, who sustained moderate injuries, was transported by helicopter to the helipad at the Hospital Universitario de Gran Canaria Doctor Negrín. Once there, she was attended to by medical staff before being moved to the hospital’s emergency department in the capital.
